Covenant Chain :: The Encyclopedia of New York State :: Syracuse University Press
The Covenant Chain grew out of the governing practices of the Iroquois Confederacy and diplomatic relations between the Europeans and American Indians living in New York.
Thus the Covenant Chain alliance grew to include more and more tribes and colonies, all trying to use the mediation process promoted by the alliance to achieve their own ends.
As the aims of the various groups came into sharper opposition during the 18th century, the Covenant Chain became less useful as a means to reach accord.

 Covenant Chain
The Covenant Chain was a complex system of alliances between the IROQUOIS League and Anglo-American colonies originating in the early 17th century, probably between New York and the MOHAWK.
The fragility of many of these ententes required more formal covenants, or a change from an iron chain which tended to rust to a silver chain.
These agreements or treaties required periodic renewals accompanied by substantial aid to the Iroquois League, or polishing of the silver chain in the native metaphor.

The Appellate Division affirmed the instant case, reasoning that under Buffalo Academy (267 NY 242, supra) the restrictive covenant contained in the chain of deeds to Witter's allegedly benefited parcel was outside the chain of title to the Taggarts' land and did not constitute binding notice to them (167 AD2d 397).
The deed contained the restrictive covenant providing that "no docks, buildings, or other structures [or trees or plants] shall be erected [or grown]" on the grantor's (Lawrance's) retained servient lands to the south "which shall obstruct or interfere with the outlook or view from the [dominant] premises" over the Winganhauppauge Creek.

 Iroquois
Essentially, the Covenant Chain was a trade and military alliance which gave the Iroquois the authority to represent its members with Europeans, but there was no vote or direct representation in the League council, Worse yet, the Iroquois were often arrogant and placed their own interests first.
There were several advantages for the British: it kept the Covenant Chain tribes from falling under French influence; negotiations with Native Americans were simplified since the British only had to deal with the Iroquois; and it also allowed the British to call upon the League a "policeman" in case of trouble.
Perhaps the Covenant Chain's worst feature was the Iroquois often placed their own (or British) interests ahead of tribes they were supposed to represent.

 Indians and the American Revolution
By the Proclamation of 1763, the lands beyond the Appalachian mountain chain were declared off limits to colonial governments, the lands being "reserved" to the Indians under the cognizance of the British Crown which reasserted its sovereignty and control over the area.
Though speculative in origin and based on ignorance of the geography of the New World and of the power of the Indian nations in the interior, the charters were brought forth in legal arguments whenever the possibility of their full realization was possible.
During the period 1763 to 1775, a series of boundaries between the colonists and the Indians of the interior were created from Lake Ontario to Florida, confirming in the minds of Indians (and of many colonists) the belief that the Indian country was closed to speculation and settlement by the increasingly aggressive colonists.
