At the start of that year Coventry Climax embarked on a V16 engine but it was not a success and eventually the company announced its withdrawal from F1.
Coventry Climax had been taken over by Jaguar Cars in 1963 but in 1968 Jaguar became part of British Leyland and Coventry Climax became part of the Special Products Division, building engines for fork lift trucks and for military uses, notably the Chieftain tank.

The firm of Coventry Climax Ltd. was founded in 1903 as Lee Stroyer by Mr Stroyer and Mr.
Coventry Climax was responsible for the design and manufacture of engines for such notable pre-war automotive marques as Triumph, Morgan, Marendaz, Clyno, Crossley, Swift, Standard etc. After the war the engines became famous for powering Kieft, Lotus, Cooper, TVR, and even one or two development Austin Healey Sprites and Triumph Heralds.
Coventry Climax became a household name after the motor racing fraternity saw the advanced design of an all-alloy, free revving, OHC fire pump engine as potential for a racing engine.

Three automotive design students from Coventry University have set up their own company and are building a working prototype of their design.
The Coventry Climax project - reviving the name used for a famous engine in the 50s and 60s - is an ethanol-fuelled two-seater said to offer 160mph and 0-60mph acceleration in 3.4 seconds.
The Climax team is already touting for orders via its website - www.conceptclimax.com - and plans to make up to 50 a year to special order.

During World War 2 Coventry Climax had supplied a number of engines for use in trailer fire pumps to the Home Office, the most common of which was the 'Light Trailer Pump' which featured a 20hp 'SM' sidevalve engine and single stage pump delivering between 230 and 330 gallons per minute.
Climax' experience with both fire pumps and high performance engines meant that they were well placed to design a suitable pump which had a remarkably advanced engine.
Climax recommended running the engine for about a minute without coolant after re-fitting the head in order to bed everything down - in this case it will be necessary to re-torque the head bolts (18 lbs/ft).
