Coventry made small engines for driving fire pumps etc. They made a bigger engine called a Coventry Godiva (bit of a pun to Brits) and I think it was the same company that built the Coventry Climax racing engines eventually.
Coventry Victor made a vast range of engines,both diesel and petrol but Coventry Climax was a different company.
The Coventry Victor engine is on the next page, and has many differences, the main visual one being the size of the crankcase and mounting feet.

Coventry Climax was responsible for the design and manufacture of engines for such notable pre-war automotive marques as Triumph, Morgan, Clyno, Crossley, Swift, Standard etc. After the war the engines were famous for powering Kieft, Lotus, Cooper, TVR, and even one or two development Austin Healey Sprites.
Coventry Climax became a household name after the motor racing fraternity saw the advanced design of an all-alloy, free revving, OHC fire pump engine as potential for a racing engine.
Entering the field of fire-pumping equipment in 1937 was opportune indeed for Coventry Climax and the advent of the Second World War plus technology gained with the Godiva range of trailer-mounted and portable pumping sets set the company in good stead for the future.

During World War 2 Coventry Climax had supplied a number of engines for use in trailer fire pumps to the Home Office, the most common of which was the 'Light Trailer Pump' which featured a 20hp 'SM' sidevalve engine and single stage pump delivering between 230 and 330 gallons per minute.
Climax' experience with both fire pumps and high performance engines meant that they were well placed to design a suitable pump which had a remarkably advanced engine.
Climax recommended running the engine for about a minute without coolant after re-fitting the head in order to bed everything down - in this case it will be necessary to re-torque the head bolts (18 lbs/ft).

Coventry Climax had been taken over by Jaguar Cars in 1963 but in 1968 Jaguar became part of British Leyland and Coventry Climax became part of the Special Products Division, building engines for fork lift trucks and for military uses, notably the Chieftain tank.
The first Coventry Climax racing engine appeared at the 1954 Le Mans 24 Hours in the back of a Kieft chassis but this failed to finish the event.
At the start of that year Coventry Climax embarked on a V16 engine but it was not a success and eventually the company announced its withdrawal from F1.

As the Coventry Climax engines were enlarged in 1958 to 2.2-liters Chapman decided to enter Grand Prix racing, running a pair of Lotus 12s at Monaco in 1958 for Graham Hill and Cliff Allison.
In 1959 - by which time the Coventry Climax engines had been stretched to 2.5-liters - Chapman continued with a front-engined F1 car but the car achieved little and so in 1960 Chapman switched to rear-engined cars with the Lotus 18.
There were no victories, competition from Cooper being intense but in 1958 Allison won the F2 class in the International Trophy at Silverstone beating Stuart Lewis-Evans's Cooper.

Coventry Climax Ltd. was founded in 1903 by ex-Daimler engineer Pulham Lee of Coventry, UK to design and build engines for small automobile companies.
Immediately prior to WWII, Coventry Climax obtained a manufacturing license from Continental for lightplane engines (J41, J42).
They were taken over by Jaguar in 1963, became part of British Leyland in 1969, and went into receivership in 1986.

 Triumph Cars 75th Anniversary
This model saw the introduction of the first Coventry Climax engines which continued until Triumph produced their own ohv engine in 1937.
Offered in the early 1960s by Jack Brabham Motors Ltd. This car was registered in 1962 and changes to the Herald specification of the period include: Coventry Climax 1218cc FEW engine, modified suspension with Koni shock absorbers, Kenlow fan and Clayton Dewandre brake servo.
This car left the Coventry production plant in early 1974 and went straight to Leyland ST at Abingdon to be stripped and converted to group 2 rally spec.
