At first glance the preponderance of letters and numbers on the cover shown in Figure 4 may seem overwhelming, but with a bit of patience one can ascertain the cover in the example is a VNAF cover.
Vietnamese military covers usually offer little beyond a sender or recipient's name and a KBC ("Khu Buu Chinh" or military postal zone) number, so it's a treat to find a cover with this much information.

Military leaders today assume that in event of crisis or major news event, they will be confronted by reporters who are unschooled in the specific details or technological background of the military story they are covering.
This is a formal “charter” for military coverage, defining the scope of military activities on which you will concentrate, the geographical boundaries of primary coverage, and an initial outline of topics and story subjects that you intend to monitor in the first 12 months of your beat.
Based on my own experience, the military beat is the most paper-pile and megabyte-creating position in the newsroom (the environmental beat and medical beat draw a close second, but their reports seem more neatly bound and covered, therefore stack more easily).

Cover (military) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In military combat cover can either refer to a barrier (usually already at the scene of battle) which can be used for protection or concealment, or it can refer to the shielding or protection of persons on the battlefield (usually on the move) by those with either superior training/equipment, or in a more secure position.
In some military services (especially in the U.S.), a hat is sometimes referred to unofficially as a cover, as in "Soldier, remove your cover!" or "You're not in uniform without your cover."

Algerian elections: FLN provides political cover for military regime
As Algerians went to the polls yesterday to elect their first civilian president after seven years of military rule, President Lamine Zeroual abruptly announced that six of the seven presidential candidates had stood down.
