		Cover versions are often sold in (The act of compiling (as into a single book or file or list)) compilations, sorted by (A class of art (or artistic endeavor) having a characteristic form or technique) genre.
		Songs by the original artists which were then successful are called (The appropriation of a new style (especially in popular music) by combining elements of different genres in order to appeal to a wider audience) crossovers as they "crossed over" from a fl to a white audience.
		Cover versions can also be in different languages; for example, (A genus of Falconidae) Falco's 1982 (A person of German nationality) German-language hit "Der Kommissar" was covered in English by (Click link for more info and facts about After the Fire) After the Fire later in the decade, although the German title was retained.

		When I was a kid, cover songs introduced me to songs that I didn't know and then I went on to discover the original versions.
		Now that I'm thirty, current groups are covering songs of my youth and annoying me. I just need to remember the fact that the kids today will enjoy the same benefits of cover songs that I did and learn to turn off the unfortunate modern versions if they suck.
		At the same time that song was big, a group called The Far Corporation had a version of Stairway To Heaven on my Top 40 countdown.

		As you know, I am obsessed with cover songs and nothing makes a cover better than a band remaking a tune that is completely out of character for their genre of music, and then making it their own.
		The best cover songs - the imaginary version of Quiet Riot's Mickey notwithstanding - are the ones where the tune is almost unrecongnizable, where the newer artist has taken the song and interpreted it their own way, rather than just making a carbon copy of the original artist's tune.

		According to this post at LawMeme, over in India, they're debating a bill that would make it illegal to cover a song without express permission from the copyright holder.
		They're doing this because producers in India will apparently produce cover songs of popular albums, and then sell them at a discount - sometimes (illegally) underreporting units sold for the purpose of paying royalties back to the original artist.
		At least in the US, covered songs (which you seem to favor) are a case of mandatory licensing (which you're against).

	Cover songs
		I see lots of covers on Soundclick, I think that warning is more legal protection for them than anything else.
		Depending on the song length, the charge varies but on average its about $.10 a play or download.
		I'm in the middle of a project of Kansas covers from their 1st 6 albums and its a bit of a bummer but I don't have any animosity toward Soundclick..its in the interest of the song writer that they are pursuing folks covering tunes.

		I found the list interesting, because I really enjoy having different versions of a song to compare; the rise of "unplugged" or "acoustic" versions adds an additional dimension, and a good acoustic cover of a song really gets my attention.
		The cover songs in my collection come from sources all over the place: movie soundtracks, tribute albums (including tributes to specific albums), cover albums, novelty albums, single-track purchases from the iTunes Music Store, and other places.
		In many cases, there isn't a recorded "original" for them to be a cover of; there also tend to be many more versions of a given song, since it seems like everyone wants to have a Christmas album.

		This should of course come to no suprise to most people, some big hits of the eighties were covers as well ("Mickey", "Der Kommisar", "You Keep Me Hanging On" (which was remade into a hit four times so far)).

		I think the worst cover of any good song is one that simply tries to replicate the original recording -- in terms of delivery, tempo, key, tone, etc. Both in the commercial pop world and the indie world, there are way too many of those to name.
		The song they covered was CCR's Bad Moon Rising, and while this cover has fallen to the obscurity it deserves, it is truly the most awful thing ever.
		On the derivative, ridiculous covers side, I just heard some goofass neo-punk wannabes (Atari something?) covering Don Henley's "Boys of Summer." The crunchy soundalike chord structure was bad enough, but the triteness of the singer's phrasing makes it entirely clear that he has absolutely no clue what the hell he's singing.

		Not really a cover as I am not aware of anyone else ever recording this track before Deep Purple, but it appears on this list because it was not written by the group.
		The song was credited to one Chester A. Powers (who was really Dino Valenti, later of Quicksilver Messenger Service), but the real composer was an obscure West Coast folk-singer by the name of Billy Roberts.
		The intro to this song was often a tune-up time for Ritchie Blackmore after the abuse suffered by his guitar during the marathon work-out of Space Truckin'.
