In regards to the recent questions about grain cars and covered hoppers in general a good point was brought up by Harold Krewer regarding spacer or idler cars ahead of the caboose.
It must have been in a general order form as I could not find it in the timetable but the Rock Island required that a spacer be provided ahead of the caboose whenever a covered hopper of any kind might be placed there.
Due to an accident caused by "harmonic rocking" in which two top heavy covered hoppers toppled off of the track taking the caboose with them the railroad imposed this regulation.

A small and easy detail here have added to all my covered hoppers as I repaint them-- a piece of brass wire to represent the brake line which runs at the bottom of one side of the car on these covered hoppers, instead of on the underbody as on most cars.
I backdated my Atlas Airslide ® covered hopper by replacing the roller-bearing trucks with Microtrains “Bettendorf” trucks with couplers, and partially/selectively repainting to remove the ACI label, etc and to change the car and class number to a car from the GA-93 class of 1955, series 310000-310049.
The old Arnold Rapido #5305 2-bay covered hopper came painted for Santa Fe, but it was in a "large graphics" lettering introduced in the 1960s.

After the glued setup and I made sure that everything was in place, I added non-magnetic weight to the car, washed the model with dish soap, and painted the car in light gray.
For lettering, I purchased a set of Micro-Scale decals (60-486) for BandO covered hoppers.
As it turns out, this one decal sheet has enough to letter four cars in a few different pre-Chessie styles, plus two Chessie cars.
