The WPA county history notes Covington County as producing an average of 15,000 bales a year; in 1934 there were 20,000 acres of cotton,177,000 acres of corn, and 3200 horses and mules.
This influx of skilled and unskilled labor caused the population of Mississippi's piney woods section to increase from 160,000 in 1880 to 400,000 in 1920 (Adkins 1979:146); the decline afterwards was significant.
