Triple Peak Cow Camp, Wyoming Cowboy Adventure
The cow camp job was, and is, still the most desired job of a cowboy, but only the most senior and lucky ones get to do it.
The historic cow camp was usually small, with no more than one or two cowboys in each camp, except in the fall when the cattle needed to be round up and taken back to the home ranch.
But the cow camp job still exists, and the cattle still have to be round up and driven home in the fall.

The system, supplied by Sunelco in Hamilton, Montana, uses two 120-watt photovoltaic modules, a passive tracking rack, and a submersible diaphragm pump with a maximum flow rate of just under one gallon per minute.
After the cows are moved off the pasture each fall, Tomlinson plans to remove the tracker and panels and store them at the ranch to avoid vandalism during hunting season.

Cow Island, in fact, in 1877 comprised two large islands (both extensively covered with cottonwoods) and several smaller ones, located in a major bend on the south side of the stream.
Across from the island proper, on the north bank of the river and west of the mouth of Cow Creek, stood Cow Island Landing, where steamboat cargoes were unloaded to await delivery upstream by freight wagons to Fort Benton for military and commercial use.
A road paralleled Cow Creek to ascend the pine-dotted bluffs leading from the canyon to the open benchlands north of the Missouri.

 THE CATTLE DRIVE
A provision of the cow permit was that proper fences be built to control grazing to approved areas - a difficult assignment where the work could be done only in the short Montana summer.
Some of the cows would head for home on their own, but always there were those that had to be hazed along to keep from straying off and joining a neighbor's herd.
It was up to the family to get their cows home the best they could since all that help so abundant in the summer didn't seem to be available now.

To join the Western Montana Sustainable Growers Union members will pledge to grow naturally, protect air and water, maintain fair labor practices and, most importantly, to sell and buy in their communities.
A key part of the "Homegrown" lifestyle is farmers buying locally as much as they sell to keep money in the community and Brieger and Elliott rarely look outside the valley for their farming needs.
They use refuse from the dairy cows, along with manure from neighboring farms and compost to make their fertilizer and grow hay for the sheep.

 Montana's Matador
The three of us stand at an elevation of 6,700 feet, smack in the center of one of the longest-serving cow pastures in Montana, where a herd of over 6,000 cow-calf pairs routinely eats and tramples the grasses that fill a nearly treeless, unfenced view in all directions.
This allows cows to press seeds and organic matter into the earth during the second year, to naturally replenish the grassland, Marxer explains, and during the third year this new growth is empowered by giving the pasture a complete rest from grazing.
All three of the Marxers' children, now 16, 15 and 13, were born during the couple's early years living at Sage Creek, a remote 50 miles from Dillon and ranch headquarters, five miles from their nearest neighbor.

Here in southwest Montana, we’re daily witnessing a transition to what, for lack of a better term, might be called the "New West".
The Madison Valley is a world-class wildlife preserve, hosting immense herds of elk, not to mention literally the full component of native wildlife (excluding bison, and perhaps someday…).
This seems to me a common-sense approach that will minimize if not eliminate conflict between outfitted clients and public hunters, increase cow harvest during the general season, disperse the large herds of (primarily) cow elk that tend to congregate on private lands, and not least, meet the public access requirements for season extensions.
