Cowbridge was the last recipient of a Royal Charter by Queen Victoria in 1886, thus was then able to appoint its own Councillors and Mayor.
Cowbridge became known for it's fairs, but by the mid 1960's it also had the doubtful reputation of having long traffic queues, being as it was on the main route to west Wales from Cardiff and the east.
In 1991 Cowbridge was twinned with CLISSON in the department of Loire-Atlantique, near Nantes in France.

The first charter granted to Cowbridge was in 1254 by Sir Richard de Clare, Lord of Glamorgan, but there is also a history of Iron Age and Roman occupations, both civilian and military, within the area.
Cowbridge, as now, was a thriving market town with trades and crafts that became the home of professional people and Vale gentry who as residents of Cowbridge could vote in Parliamentary elections.
Local produce was exported across the Channel from the nearby port of Aberthaw and later with the growth of private transport Cowbridge became an important market town and was acknowledge as the unofficial capital of the Vale.

Cowbridge (Welsh: Y Bont-faen) is a market town in the Vale of Glamorgan, south Wales.
Cowbridge Grammar School was founded during the 17th century and had close links with Jesus College, Oxford through its founder, Dr Leoline Jenkins.
Cowbridge Museum is located in the town hall, a building dating back perhaps as far as the Elizabethan era, which served as a prison until 1830, when it was converted to replace the former guild hall, demolished at that date.

The Sergeant admitted that he had had one drink at the Cowbridge Arms and one at The Bear Hotel, but denied that he went into the Duke of Wellington, had a drink there and was assisted out of the house by the licensee who left him holding on to the door-post.

A Bridgend and Cowbridge Union workhouse for 200 inmates was erected in 1836-8 at the east side of Quarella Road in Bridgend.
The Bridgend and Cowbridge workhouse, built in his favoured Elizabethan style, also foreshadowed appearance of the workhouses in Ireland all of which were designed by Wilkinson (see for example Swineford).

The last time I was in Cowbridge was in 1978 - we found out the pubs opened an hour later than in Cardiff, so off to Cowbridge.
My mum is moving to Cowbridge, after 25 years in rural Mid Wales, and she has found Cowbridge full of interesting people ready to welcome her into all sorts of activities...which has made what could have been quite a traumatic move from family home in the country to smaller town house really easy.
Cowbridge also still has some proper pubs, not all tarted up into restaurants with beer...the Vale of Glamorgan, Masons Arms and Edmondes Arms come to mind.
