  CHRS - Cowichan River
The Cowichan River on Vancouver Island flows 47 kms from mountain-ringed Cowichan Lake through forests and fields to a large ocean estuary at Cowichan Bay.
Cowichan, derived from the Coast Salish word ‘Khowutzun’ means “land warmed by the sun” and ice formation on the river is rare.
Today, the river valley is a homeland to the Cowichan First Nation and a recreational treasure at the doorstep of nearby communities.

 AMBIENT WATER QUALITY OBJECTIVES FOR THE COWICHAN AND KOKSILAH RIVERS
The Cowichan River, which originates at the south end of Cowichan Lake, is the most important river on Vancouver Island for recreational fisheries (steelhead, cutthroat, rainbow, brown trout and kokanee) and commercail fisheries (coho, chinook and chum).
Three permitted discharges to the Cowichan River, a small abandoned base metal mine, public wharves near the outlet of the lake and an operational sawmill upstream from the Cowichan River, are potential sources of contaminants to the Cowichan River.
Coliform bacteria are frequently detected at the outlet of Cowichan Lake and in the Koksilah River at the highway.

The Cowichan River supports two species of native trout: the rainbow and the cutthroat, and an introduced species: the brown trout.
The larger cowichan rainbows, cutthroat trout and brown trout gorge themselves on salmon fry in the spring.
