Stanley is past president of the Kansas Chapter of the American Society of Farm Managers and Rural Appraisers and is vice-president of the Kansas Society of Farm Managers and Rural Appraisers.
Walter came to Kansas from Indiana at the age of seventeen, while Margaret was born in Cowley County and attended Fairview School west of the Winfield Country Club.
Although he resided in Cowley County for only a brief period (David settled with his five sons and wife on a farm just east of Winfield in 1894), the impact that his descendants had within the county prompted the submission of this article.

COWLEY COUNTY -- The winter of 1869-70 witnessed the first white settlement of Cowley county.
Story was elected county superintendent in 1874; A. Limerick, in 1882; Ella S. Kelley, in 1886; Julia L. Caton, in 1888; and Lida S. Brady, in 1890.
Southwest Kansas College -— At its March session, 1885, the Southwest Kansas Conference determined to locate a college somewhere upon its field, and appointed a board of trustees and a committee on location, and announced its readiness to receive proposals from towns desiring the location.

The great feature of this department was the displays of Cowley County products from a single farm, the prize being $25 to first, $15 to second, $10 to third, and $5 to fourth.
That Cowley sported such a well drilled and complete military company was a surprise to many who hadn't had the opportunity to see them on dress parade.
These same persons, some of them at least, went to the Kansas City fair, paid fifty cents to get in, and fifty cents for a seat in the grand stand besides other charges, and did not complain a whimper, though the exposition was not near as good as that of the Cowley County Fair.

Cowley County is located in southcentral Kansas, less than one hour from Wichita and two hours from Tulsa and Oklahoma City.
Named in honor of Matthew Cowley, First Lieutenant of Company I, Ninth Kansas Cavalry, who died in the service October 7, 1864, at Little Rock, Ark. The county was originally named Hunter after R. Hunter of Virginia.
The Kansas State Historical Society also has more historical data for Cowley County online including a rich bibliography and lists of cemeteries, post offices, and newspapers.

In Volume Two of Cowley County, Kansas, history, the county becomes a lens through which the panorama of the old west becomes finely focused on the lives of individuals doing their best to survive and prosper under conditions we have difficulty imagining.
We learn from the Cowley County newspapers that some of the Southern Cheyenne left their reservation in Indian Territory to participate in the "Custer Massacre" and then returned to report the battle from their perspective to their Indian agent.
Recently I was given a book entitled History of Cowley County, Kansas, Volume two, with the main heading "The Indians." Not only is it most interesting, but one has to appreciate all the research that went into it.
