  Cowra breakout - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Cowra, in a farming district about 250km from Sydney, was the town nearest to No. 12 Prisoner of War Compound, a major POW camp, where 4,000 Axis military personnel and civilians were detained.
The prisoners at Cowra also included Italians, Koreans who had served in the Japanese military, and Indonesian civilians detained at the request of the Dutch East Indies government.
Cowra maintains a significant Japanese war cemetery, and a Japanese garden was later built, on Bellevue Hill, to commemorate these events.

The graves of the Japanese, who were buried in Cowra, were well cared for by members of the local Returned Servicemen’s League, a humanitarian gesture which touched Japanese embassy officials who then broached the idea of an official Japanese War Cemetery.
A further anti-war symbol in Cowra is the World Peace Bell in Civic Square; and the planting of an avenue of cherry trees connecting the war cemeteries, the POW campsite and the Japanese Garden.
The introduction of the POW Theatre, at the Cowra Vistors Centre, is another attraction explaining the war years, the breakout and the reconciliation process since then.

 Cowra Prison Breakout
On Saturday, 5 August 1944 Japanese prisoners at Cowra staged a breakout that resulted in the deaths of 4 young Australians and 231 Japanese.
At 0150 hours on Saturday 5 August 1944 an unauthorized bugle was heard in camp B and immediately thereafter up to 900 Japanese prisoners of war rushed from their huts and attacked the fences of the compound.
It was this mutual incomprehension between the two races which led to the 'night of a thousand suicides' when the Japanese in the Cowra prison camp attempted a mass breakout on 5 August 1944.

In the early morning of 5 August 1944, 1,104 Japanese prisoners were involved in a mass breakout from Camp No. 12 at Cowra.
Some research by Robert Piper indicated that there are 19 bodies in the Cowra POW Camp, who were from the first Japanese air raids on Darwin on 19 February 1942.
It is believed that Katsuyoshi Tsuru was one of those 19 buried.
