Topic: Crab grass

Welcome to Island Lawn & Garden   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-11)
Crab grass plants produce a prolific number of seeds and like broadleaf weed seeds, they are easily transported by wind and birds.
I have consulted on lawns that were 70%+ crab grass and have seen pictures of that same lawn, when it was brand new 4 - 7 years earlier, and in a 100% crab grass free condition.
Crab grass prevention, therefore, should be viewed as a multi-year or ongoing project.

JS Online:Timing most important in crab grass battle
Crab grass was one of the very first cultivated grains in the world; dating back a few thousand years.
Although there are a few varieties of crab grass throughout the United States, the most common is the species known as "Large" or "Hairy." It's an annual weed, which means it dies every fall once it is hit with a frost, but not before it manages to reproduce.
Crab grass is best controlled through the use of a pre-emergent herbicide (a weed killer applied prior to germination), which is usually combined with a fertilizer for easier spreading.

 The crab spiders of Africa
The crab spiders are arguably the beauties of the spider world and one of the most intriguing.
Twisted grass blades and grass seeds are bunched together by the grass dwellers with silk threads and used as retreats or to deposit the egg sacs.
Crab spiders are common and occur in fairly high numbers on most crops and garden plants.

Crab Grass Control   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-11)
Crab Grass is an annual weed which means that it grows from seed each year and each plant produces well over one million seeds each and every year.
Crab Grass will also rear its ugly head under overhead cables where birds sit and defecate as the seed passes through their digestive system intact.
Crab Grass can be effectively controlled using a combination of cultural and chemical methods.

 Crab grass - Gardening & Landscape - BBS - BobVila.com
Go ahead and reseed, but understand that the best time to attack crab grass is in the spring, before it comes up, with a pre-emergence fertilizer.
It's a safe bet that you won't be able to solve your crab grass problem in one year.
But reseeding now with perhaps a little top-dressing if necessary will start new grass which can continue to fill in next spring when the crab grass is having difficulty because of the pre-emergence.

Foreign grass is a wild form of grass that invades lawns and spoils the even and consistent color and texture.
These grasses are often mistaken for "crab grass." In western Oregon and Washington, it is very rare to see crab grass.
However, because foreign grasses are in the same family as desirable turf grass, the products that eliminate them will also damage the grass that you want to keep.

Fall is the best time to fertilize your lawn
Crab grass is an annual weed that can continue sprouting throughout the summer.
So even if you put down a pre-emergent crab grass killer in the spring, seeds can find their way to your lawn in the summer and it doesn't take them long to stretch out and take over.
Since crab grass is an annual, it is going to die out this winter and leave more bare patches.

Anyway my question pertains to an advertisment in that issue concerning grass plugs that claim to take over crab grass, does not need to be watered and only needs to be cut a few time during the growing season.
Being a warm season grass, if you don't fertilize it (it is one of the warm seasons that does respond to nitrogen fertilizer) I guess it would only need to be cut "a few times during the growing season." And it will eventually choke out everything...most especially your gardens.
Rather than trying to plant a grass that will "take over" crab grass, you might consider simply using pre-emergent treatments, if the thought of something synthetic applied to your lawn doesn't deter you.

At the heart of the matter is the fact that it is a legitimate type of grass, similar to the “good kinds” you want to have in your lawn.
Fertilize it regularly (grass is a heavy feeder, particularly of nitrogen), mow it frequently at a relatively tall height as opposed to infrequent drastic mowings, keep any broadleaf weeds under control, and keep it well watered, again choosing to water regularly and frequently in managed doses rather than a few infrequent floodings all season.
The objective is to give the desirable turf grasses the advantage by always keeping them a step ahead of the crab grass.
