 ADW: Cracidae: Information
Taxa within Cracidae are commonly referred to as curassows (Nothocrax, Mitu, Pauxi, Crax), guans (Penelope, Pipile, Aburria, Chamaepetes, Penelopina, Oreophasis) or chachalacas (Ortalis).
Analyses of molecular and morphological evidence generally support the monophyly of Cracidae and its inclusion in Galliformes.
Two proposed hypotheses suggest that either Cracidae is sister to Megapodiidae or that Cracidae and the rest of Galliformes form a group that is sister to Megapodiidae.

 Cracid CAMP Executive Summary
Because of their ethnobiological importance, guans and curassows are primary cadidates for use as bio-indicators for monitoring and management of protected areas throughout Latin America, as well as flagship species for the conservation of Neotropical rainforests.
This document is a result of the conservation workshops held at the Third International Cracidae Meeting, coupled with the data compiled at the first CAMP for the Cracidae.
Plenary sessions in the meeting concerned updates on the status and biology of the Cracidae in the field, and on new techniques in their conservation.

 ADW: Galliformes: Information
Five groups within Galliformes are variously recognized: Megapodiidae (7 genera, 19 to 22 species), Cracidae (11 genera, 50 species), Numididae (4 genera, 6 species), Odontophoridae (9 genera, 32 species) and Phasianidae (49 genera, 180 species).
Two proposed hypotheses suggest that either Megapodiidae is sister to Cracidae or that Megapodiidae is sister to the group comprising Cracidae and Phasianidae.
Relationships within Megapodiidae, Cracidae and Phasianidae remain unresolved and different analyses have split Phasianidae into a number of distinct groups.

Congeneric species have a striking pattern of allopatric distributions that might be attributable to vicariance, dispersal, or a combination of the two.
A study group of relatively sedentary birds, such as the curassows, should provide some insight on how important dispersal is to the evolutionary history of less-mobile birds.
Curassows are large, heavy-bodied galliform birds of the family Cracidae, distributed in the rainforests and highland forests of the Neotropical region, where they are generally associated with rivers, lakes, and other water bodies (del Hoyo 1994).
