Cracker (UK TV series) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Cracker is the title of a television crime series in the United Kingdom, made by Granada Television for ITV and created and principally written by Jimmy McGovern.
The case of a serial rapist who wears a mask, yet tries to develop a relationship with his victims strikes at the heart of Fitz's personal and professional life when Penhaligon is raped and the rapist, apparently acting on Fitz's advice, starts to kill as well.
Cracker's conception was also in some ways a reaction against the police procedural approach of fellow Granada crime serial Prime Suspect, placing more emphasis on emotional and psychological truth than on correct police procedure.

DVD Talk Review: Cracker - The Complete US Series
Cracker was a short lived crime drama based upon a series of the same name.
The original Cracker series was produced in the United Kingdom and starred Robbie Coltrane as the main character.
At the root this newer series is pretty much the same as the original, but it includes a number of differences that the show is clearly not the same thing played in a different setting with a different group of actors.

Cracker - This is the common term used to describe a malicious hacker, though it also can refer to code breakers.
Crackers get into all kinds of mischief, including breaking or "cracking" copy protection on software programs, breaking into systems and causing harm, changing data, or stealing.
Hackers largely regard crackers as a less educated group of individuals who cannot truly create their own work, and simply steal other people's work to cause mischief or for personal gain, not to promote understanding.

Gerry "Fitz" Fitzgerald is an insulting, nosy, loathsome individual who is drunken excuse for a husband, a lousy father, and a gambling washout but he has one saving grace - he is a brilliant psychologist with an uncanny ability to see the evil in people, bring them to confess and walk away unscathed.
Cracker was based upon the Cracker series for the UK...
Fitz and the police are startled to discover that the next target for the serial killer is someone they all have a relationship with, putting them under far more pressure, as things become increasingly dangerous.

"Cracker" is one of those series that, in my opinion, should never have played on network television; it's my belief that the show would likely have enjoyed a much longer life had it played as a cable TV series.
Since the American version of "Cracker" had such a limited run, it's quite possible that this may end up being the only DVD release that we'll ever see of this series and, as such, should be savored for the late Robert Pastorelli's fine performance in the title role.
This is the two-part series opener and it's a good enough introduction to the series, though the second episode tends to drag a bit, especially during Fitz's (Pastorelli) confrontation with a woman who has electrocuted several young men.

DVD Verdict Review - Cracker: Series 2
If anything, Series 2 surpasses the first go-around as it fleshes out the characters, breaks even more conventions, jeopardizes several of the supporting cast, and further redefines the world of broadcast police stories.
When you describe to someone that Cracker is the best police show ever to not have wall-to-wall action, but instead relies totally on dialogue and character study to seal its drama, there will probably be a glint of disbelief in their eyes.
Series 2 looks cleaner, sharper, and newer, and crackles with colorful details that the first go-around apparently couldn't achieve.

 Television Heaven
Under McGovern and fellow Cracker writer Paul Abbot's expert scripting, the dark and seedy underbelly of the Northwest was exposed to the cynically insightful gaze of Fitz's almost Sherlockian intellect in a series of complex, intelligent stories, which drew the viewers into a psychological cesspool of unrestrained psychosis and violent aberration.
To ensure that the series was as authentic as possible within the bounds of dramatic licence, the maker's Granada brought in the expert services of psychologist Ian Stephen, who helped police track down the notorious serial killer Bible John in 1969, as technical adviser.
But given the strict dictates of US Network policies, much of the power, brutality and sheer strength of the original's were fatally lost in the translation.

The ABC, which has been running the first series over the past three Saturday nights, has promised to screen the first two series and will run the third and final series if possible.
The really good news is that British TV network ITV has confirmed a new series is in the pipeline for next year - but more about that later.
Another theme that lifts Cracker above the pack is that Fitz's path to the criminal is lit not by what he knows about criminals but by what he knows about people.

The US series was horrible, I think Robert Pastorelli did the best he could.
As much as I hate to say it, as Cracker is my all time favourite TV series, it probably “jumped the shark” at ‘Brotherly Love’ which marked the end of Jimmy Beck and the end of Jimmy McGovern writing the series.
Granted, the series finale in Hong Kong is the poorest of all and verges on silly (silliest moment being the 'marriage' between the killer and his girlfriend, both in full wedding dress, in a skip), but it's still a hundred times better than most other crime series.

Battlestar Galactica's Edward James Olmos wasn't kidding when he said "the series is even better than the miniseries." As developed by sci-fi TV veteran Ronald D. Moore, the "reimagined" BG is exactly what it claims to be: a drama for grown-ups in a science-fiction setting.
The mature intelligence of the series is its greatest asset, from the tenuous respect between Galactica's militarily principled commander Adama (Olmos) and politically astute, cancer-stricken colonial President Roslin (Mary McDonnell) to the barely suppressed passion between ace Viper pilot "Apollo" (a.k.a.
