Topic: Cracker TV series

Cracker (British television) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Cracker is the title of a television crime series in the United Kingdom, made by Granada Television for ITV and created by Jimmy McGovern.
Several different psychotic types were explored during the run of the show with increasingly complex psychological motivations that, as the series entered the middle of the second season, began to expand beyond the criminals being investigated to the regular cast members.
Some of the later episodes of the series were written by Paul Abbott, who later went on to forge a highly successful career as creator of his own high-profile dramas such as Touching Evil (1997), State of Play (2003) and Shameless (2004).

Although Eccleston was already fairly well-known from his roles in the TV series Cracker and the film Shallow Grave the series very much consolidated and built his reputation as an actor and star, and helped to establish McKee in much the same vein.
The series was made available in the UK on VHS across two double-video packs soon after transmission, and was released on DVD in a four-disc box set by BMG in 2002.

Shindler began her career working for Granada Television, for whom she first came to prominence as a script editor on the renowned ITV drama series Cracker (1993).
She then went on to work as Assistant Producer on the BBC's epic Our Friends in the North (1996) and Producer on the critically-acclaimed Hillsborough, a dramatised account of the tragic 1989 football stadium disaster.

Cracker: Series 1 was fine--a terrific premiere and two interesting sequels introduced freelance police psychologist Eddie "Fitz" Fitzgerald (Robbie Coltrane) and his family and colleagues—but series 2 is unexpectedly and vastly superior.
But a series of class-anger killings by a psychotic welder-turned-skinhead pulls Fitz into a case so disastrous that every major and minor character is profoundly affected.
Robbie Coltrane's outstanding creation of 'Fitz', in the PBS series Cracker 1 continues his journey as a criminal psychologist in three more episodes: To be a Somebody, The Big Crunch, and Men Should Weep.

But like its Granada TV stablemate Prime Suspect, Cracker also delves deep into the main characters' personal lives, revealing a chaos of emotional entanglements that become increasingly inseparable from their professional duties.
The great strengths of this series are Jimmy McGovern's gripping, intelligent scripts and the terrific performances, notably from Robbie Coltrane as Fitz, and Lorcan Cranitch as the increasingly unhinged Jimmy Beck.
Basically the most imaginative tv cop drama you're ever likely to see, great cast, script etc. DVD is sadly lacking in extras, for some reason there is only music on the first episode, which was great.

Cracker - Robert Pastorelli's USA version back on DVD this Summer
After a succesful run in the U.K. of Cracker, starring Robbie Coltrane ("Hagrid" of the Harry Potter films), ABC tried bringing the series to the USA in 1997.
The new version of the show had a 15-episode run (including one double-length show near the end) from Sept. 1997 to Mar. 1999, finishing its run with the showing of unaired episodes on A&E. Only the pilot episode of the Robert Pastorelli-starring version has made it to DVD so far, however.
Streeting in June on DVD will be the TV series "Cracker" and "Gun," which was created by Robert Altman with a cast including James Gandolfini, Kirsten Dunst and Randy Quaid.

 Salon | "Playing God"
Director Andy Wilson, who helmed episodes of the gritty British TV series "Cracker," makes his feature film debut by having his actors and stuntpeople merely go through the motions.
The movie's main appeal would seem to be David Duchovny, star of television's "The X-Files" (and of next summer's "X-Files" movie, "Blackwood"), who is called upon to carry a drama that has none of the quirky trappings or comic infrastructure of his sci-fi TV show.
And given the fact that the majority of the audience at the screening I attended walked right by the pile of free Duchovny posters available at the end of the movie, "Playing God" is essentially a cautionary tale for actors who reach beyond their limits -- and possibly for their fans, as well.

 Britmovie - Heart 1999
Few would deny that Jimmy McGovern is one of Britain’s most powerful television writers, not least for bringing a social conscience to the whodunit genre with the TV series Cracker.
A domestic thriller, it concerns Gary (Eccleston), a pilot who suffers a jealousy induced heart attack due to the philandering of his TV producer wife (Hardie) and a foul-mouthed young scriptwriter (Twin Town's excellent Rhys Ifans).
Heart is a conventional, Hollywood influenced schlock dressed as something more profound and authentic, betrayed by cheap puns in the script ("I've had a change of heart") and in the soundtrack (Dusty Springfield's Anyone Who Had A Heart, schoolchildren singing "Give me joy in my heart").

When the Americans decided to remake the show almost word for word with Robert Pastorelli in the lead, it was a pretty fruitless attempt to sell a great series to a wider audience.
