Cradley - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Cradley is a small village in the "Black Country" of Worcestershire, near Halesowen and the banks of the river Stour.
Cradley is less famous for coal mining than chain making, but between 1850 and 1950 the collieries were no less important than the chain works in the local economy and for the legacy they left.
Cradley is mentioned in a charter made by King Edred of England, King of the West Saxons (946 A.D. - 955 A.D.) in the year 950.

 In search of the Stour!
Often the River Stour is very close to the Staffordshire and Worcestershire canal in this part of its journey.
Secondly, two hundred years of the heaviest industry have taken a dreadful toll on the River Stour as it winds through the Black Country regions of Halesowen, Cradley, Lye and then on to Stourbridge.
It has to be said that the river that gave its name to the town does have a bit of an image problem, first of all, the River Stour is only about 25 miles from its source, to where it finally flows into the UK's largest river, the River Severn.

It has more in common with its former county of Worcestershire than where it is geographically located, in the West Midlands conurbation.
Then, as now, the seat had a very high proportion of workers engaged in manufacturing industry, and an above average-sized Asian and black population.
