The Crag Martin, Ptyonoprogne rupestris, is a small passerine bird in the swallow family.
Crag Martins are somewhat similar in habits and appearance to the other aerial insectivores, such as the related swallows and the unrelated swifts (order Apodiformes).
Crag Martins build neat quarter-sphere nests lined with mud collected in their beaks, and lay 3-5 eggs.

The Sand Martin (Riparia riparia) is a migratory passerine bird in the swallow family.
The Sand Martin appears towards the end of March, just in advance of the swallow, as the first of its family, flitting over the larger sheets of water in search of early flies.
The Sand Martin is brown above, white below with a narrow brown band on the breast; the bill is fl, the legs brown.

Martin returned in 1992 with Al Phizacklea to make the first free ascent, perhaps the most frightening and impressive lead on Scafell at that time and the first E7 on the crag.
Over on Dove Crag there were queues for Dovedale Grooves, Extol and even Westmorland's Route while there were a numerous climbers powering up and flying off the North Buttress routes.
Climbers are urged to avoid the crag in general and this climb in particular until the local Mountain Rescue Team have had a chance to assess the situation.

Crag Martins are somewhat similar in habits and appearance to the other aerial (Small insect-eating mainly nocturnal terrestrial or fossorial mammals) insectivores, such as the related swallows and the unrelated (Small plain-colored bird that resembles a swallow and is noted for its rapid flight) swifts (order Apodiformes).
They resemble (Swallow of the northern hemisphere that nests in tunnels dug in clay or sand banks) Sand Martins, but are larger, darker below, and lack a breast band.

Hi John J, Although I have never seen Crag Martin,I think that you have no problems here,they seem to be Crag Martins.In particular,note the contrast between the darker underwing coverts and the rest of the underwing and the lack of a breastband(as on Sand Martin)
The problem is that I have seen hundreds of Crag Martins and I doubted very much if these two birds were Crag Martins.
I have encountered Crag Martins many times, in fact I saw a few not long after watching these two birds but in a different location.

Upon doing a bit of research, I found that this place was known to harbour Wallcreepers, Crag Martins and of course Peregrine Falcons.
Having seen many Peregrines in Ireland and Crag Martins two years earlier at Via Mala gorge, Vallespluga, in Italy, my main focus was the Wallcreeper.
The castle itself is also a decent place to observe Crag Martins in the company of Swallows and House Martins.

Noor, Martin and Lin insisted that the vans stopped on the way home to be able to capture the moment indelibly on film.
Martin and Lin commented that they had only seen this orchid before in Crete.

I have posted a topic on pragati nagar lake already, but probably there isn't enough space to hold the long message I wrote, so I am continuing here and writing in a brief manner.
The other species I 've seen here are fl winged stilts20-30 in number,red wattled lapwing;1, Little stint;3, Black headed gulls;5, River terns;20-30,Pied king fisher;1,Blue eared kingfisher;2resident,Dusky crag martin;10,barn swallows;10,wire tailed swallows20-30.I believe some swallows have their nests under the bridge.
Other species I have seen here,also in considerable numbers are streaked fantail warbler,pied wagtail, yellow wagtail, Small bee eater, Ashy prinia, Common tailor bird, Indian robin and the house sparrow.

 Riparia riparia
The Sand Martin is the smallest, most lightly built, member of the martin family and the only one which doesn't build a nest.
In Britain they are easily identified because they are the only martins which look brown in flight rather than fl.
In south-western Europe they also have to be distinguished from Crag Martins which are also generally brown, but much chunkier and lack the diagnostic brown breast band of northern Sand Martins.

To get to the crag you can either bush bash up the hill (definitely not recommended!), or walk up to the lighthouse and scramble down the big bushy gully in the middle of the crag (quite obvious from the beach - it has two huge fallen blocks in it).
The crag is located within the Ku-Ring-Gai Chase National Park, however due to its location (on Barrenjoey Headland), climbing is allowed here.
On an early attempt (pre bolts), Craig D. Martin took a 10m ground fall.

Situated in the hills to the north-east of Capestang the town is built around a natural rock bridge and there are deep gorges cutting through the rock plateau.
The cliffs have Alpine Swift, Crag Martin and Rock Sparrow and the scarce Wallcreeper (Wall Creeper) is a winter visitor.
Sightings could include short-toed eagle, peregrine, alpine swift, fl woodpecker, woodlark, crag martin, water pipit, fl-bellied dipper, crested tit, red-backed shrike and citril finch.
