Now, when you hear that a player is trying to play through an injury--like Craig Counsell is doing--you can actually expect success in many cases.
Counsell is the type of player who should be able to do it--he’s self-aware, smart, and doesn’t rely on his physical gifts alone to play the game.
Counsell remains the best available placeholder for Stephen Drew and/or Justin Upton.

Florida Marlins traded Craig Counsell to Los Angeles Dodgers in exchange for a player to be named later (June 15, 1999); Florida Marlins received Ryan Moskau (July 15, 1999).
Counsell was terrible, of course (he is Craig Counsell); a no-slug, all-OBP guy whose walk rate isn't especially high and who depends on a lot of groundball singles isn't a good match for anybody, and Dodger Stadium in particular is a poor match.
The weird part is, this is about as close to a "win" as a one-for-one player swap to get Craig Counsell can be: Moskau, a first baseman whom the Dodgers picked in the 6th round the previous June, didn't amount to anything.

A month ago it looked like Giles would be playing centerfield and the other 2 outfield spots would probably go to Matt Stairs and Craig Wilson, thus making the outfield very good offensively and possibly the worst in all of baseball defensively.
Craig Wilson hit.313/.376/.482 against lefties last year, so he could step into the lineup in RF, with Lofton going to the bench.
They are also looking at having a lineup with Chad Moeller/Rod Barajas, Craig Counsell and Tony Womack taking up 38% of the non-pitcher spots.

Brady Clark- RF Craig Counsell- SS He is in need of a shortstop and possibly a right fielder, although Clark showed flashes of brilliance last season.
By taking out Counsell and adding Sexson, the team will pay Richie about $4.85M in 2004, which is quite a bargain.
Counseling might not sound like a penalty--and it's not--but that guy is going to take some abuse in the press and on the field.

 Only Baseball Matters
On the offensive side of the ball (can you say that for baseball, or is that cliche only reserved for football?), Arizona is without their best hitter, left fielder Luis Gonzalez, who injured his shoulder last week and is out for the entire post-season.
In addition to Gonzalez, they are also without last year's playoff hero, Craig Counsell.
They've lost Brian Anderson for the season, Craig Counsell is hurt again, Matt Williams is too, and now Luis Gonzalez separated his shoulder as D'backs lost their fourth game in a row.

It would be nice to see him step up to the challenge with a good performance today.
Damian Easley grounded ball sharply over pitcher's mound, touched by Williams, fielded by Cedeno one foot off the bag, Cedeno stepped on 2B, threw to 1st, easy DP, three outs, no runs.
Williams was behind on every hitter the first two inings, then he started to throw strikes more consistently.

Like the Dodgers and Padres, this is a team built for adequacy, only just a little less so.
Cintron should eat either Counsell's or Clayton's lunch by mid-season.
I could easily have given Snyder the rookie rating, but giving that boost to both him and Hill would have spotted them 18 unearned Win Shares at catcher, and most teams only aspire to that.
