Missing entirely is any description of Ellwood's sense of humor, his visual sensibility, his methods of communication within his office or personal details like whether or not he lived in a house of his own design.
More than his associates and most of the architectural profession, Craig Ellwood knew how to create opportunities for good design and this is the critical distinction between those that rise to prominence and the 98+ percent of practitioners licensed (or unlicensed) that don't.

Perez Gomez's book on Craig Ellwood to be the kind of architecture book that I'm always looking for, but can rarely find.
I'm a great fan of architecture books about this era and after reading this book, I finally have the feeling that I have been educated beyond a few pat statements from a well intentioned tour guide, which is the usual feeling I have after most books of this type.

The Art Center College of Design moved to the Craig Ellwood designed building on the 175 acre site overlooking the Rose Bowl in 1977.
As part of the design process Craig Hodgetts led a charrette with fifty students acting as clients; the students decided on the site, a favorite student hangout with great views of the Valley and Pasadena, and the allocation of space.

Ellwood was (like Barry) a "residential designer." He had impeccable taste, within the tenets of high modernism, had did a remarkable series of houses that were as elegant--as "high style"--as anything produced in the twentieth century.
These works would have become comparable to the Villa Savoye or the Farnsworth House as historic icons, had they been more innovative or irreducably "pure" as conceptions.
I'm a great admirer of Ellwood--even if his language now seems to have become a period style.
