As an art-school student, creator Craig McCracken — who got his start on Cartoon Network's excellent "Dexter's Laboratory" — said he wanted to do a superhero cartoon but didn't want to build it around the usual muscle-bound, man-of-steel hero type.
On board is a commentary track by creator/director McCracken and art director Mike Moon; the two seem to get a kick out of chatting about how hard (or how easy) the various scenes were to animate, and they laugh over the effects they created that sometimes ended up used in completely different scenes.
McCracken also points out in-jokes and references that might escape the casual viewer — the opening scene with the Professor in the supermarket, for example, is a nod to The Big Lebowski.

My closing thought for this year centers on a quote from Foster's Craig McCracken, who said the following in an August 2004 LA Times interview....
Now, Craig, the 'Powerpuff Girls' creator, hastily puts the foreign studios out to pasture, but it's hard to imagine the future of US Flash TV animation without overseas partners.
Macromedia's vector production suite was supposed to deliver new budgetary lows, but instead faster retakes, better acting and higher quality emerged as top-line benefits, thanks to Craig and his crew over at Cartoon Network.

Creator Craig McCracken has enough grasp of the delicate line between homage and satire to rise above the kid-appeal merchandising that's plastered the girls' anime-a-go-go faces everywhere you turn.
McCracken's "targets" are the things he clearly, undoubtedly loves--Japanese design sense, Batman (the TV one), and Krofft Superstars.
In McCracken's introduction, he simply states, "I love these bands, and listening to their music inspires my own work." Fair enough--since it’s people like Shonen Knife (well, duh), Cornelius, and PPG end-theme authors Bis, all of whom marry Hello Kitty cuteness with a genuinely inventive take on Western influences.

With Imaginary Friends, not only does McCracken move to a longer format and fleshier characters, but he starts from script, instead of storyboards, to create each 22-minute episode.
Like McCracken's Powerpuff Girls, Imaginary Friends tweaks the notion of children as obedient creatures chasing butterflies or angelically dozing at their mother's breast.
McCracken's kids have scabs, dirty hands, messy hair, are sometimes naughty, but eager to be good – if it's not too boring.
