Topic: Craigleith

The Town of The Blue Mountains
Craigleith was the home of the famous Sir Sanford Fleming whom we know as "The Father of Standard Time", and also as the site of the tragic sinking of the steamer Mary Ward in 1872, commemorated by Ward’s Road which marks Craigleith’s western boundary.
The popular Craigleith Depot, one of the last of the old wooden CNR stations, is the location of acres of fabulous lilac blossoms every spring.
Craigleith is more than just a "Rocky Bay": Northwinds Beach, the home of board sailing in Ontario, teams with bathers and sun worshipers on its sandy shore, and Craigleith Provincial Park lures the campers to come with its fishing, fossil hunting, and its proximity to many tourist sites.

This week, Bill and the team are on the island of Craigleith, in the Firth of Forth, a mile offshore from North Berwick in Scotland.
There are a number of obvious puffin predators in the skies above Craigleith, like gulls and peregrine falcons, but they are not in high enough numbers to have driven the puffins down so quickly by themselves.
The possibility of storms and rough seas make landing on Craigleith a bit hairy and the island is soon to be visited by seals giving birth, so the team must work a miracle if they are to clear sufficient tree mallow before nature drives them off the island.

With it continuing to pour down, it was the AS Craigleith fans who were singing in the rain shortly after, when Vincent Stirrat harried the Salvesen defence and he was rewarded for his hard work when he won the ball before going on to score a great equaliser.
When the AS Craigleith defence didn’t clear their lines properly after a free-kick into their goalmouth, the ball fell nicely for Salvesen skipper, Jamie Lipscombe, to smash a tremendous shot into the net to put his side 2-1 up.
AS Craigleith looked to be in the mood from the start and they scored their first goal in the 18th minute, Keir MacNab picking up a rebound off a luckless defender to smash the ball into the net to put his side 1-0 up.

 Puffins dig their own graves
Puffin numbers have halved in recent years as the invasive tree mallow took over the island, growing in the manure-rich burrow entrances and preventing the puffins from breeding.
Although Atlantic puffin numbers are increasing rapidly across most of the east coast of Scotland, at Craigleith near North Berwick the reverse has been the case.
The decline has been blamed on the rapid expansion of the tree mallow which grows in dense stands up to 3m tall and prevents the puffins from accessing their burrows.

It is only the third time in its history that Nelson’s Column has been restored and the project saw a unique partnership between the Mayor of London and insurance company Zurich, which sponsored the restoration.
The Craigleith stone used to repair Nelson was salvaged during a restoration of Donaldson's School for the Deaf, an A-listed building in Edinburgh, and was donated to the Nelson’s Column restoration by Scottish company Watson Stonecraft.
Using modern radar equipment, the restorers were able to establish that the arm had not been permanently 'broken', as Victorian restorers had feared, but could be repaired by stonemasonry.  The repairs return the arm to its original condition.

The island of Craigleith in the Firth of Forth once had a population of 28,000 puffins.
Scientists are looking to create havens for the birds on nearby islands, because enabling them to remain on Craigleith would require intense, long-term management of the plant, which could prove unfeasible.
Mild winters caused by climate change are thought to have helped accelerate the spread in the last few years, with the plant taking root in puffins' burrows and leaving them homeless.
