Crampons - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Crampons are a framework of spikes that are attached to boots to provide traction on snow and ice.
While crampons are an invaluable tool for a mountaineer, they were not used as often as today until the development of plastic-shelled climbing boots, because the straps used to affix the crampons to early mountaineering boots (which were made of leather) had a tendency to restrict bloodflow to the feet of the wearer.
Crampons are usually made of hardened steel, but lighter weight aluminum crampons are popular for alpine ski touring where the need for them is less frequent and counterbalanced by the need for a light pack yielding fast, efficient travel over long distances.

 Women Climbing: crampons
Crampons can be divided into five categories according to the type of terrain they are designed for: waterfall ice; general mountaineering; technical alpine ice; trekking/hiking; and ski mountaineering.
This is because of the great tendency of waterfall crampons to "ball up" when walking on snow, creating a platform of snow on the bottom of the crampon that destroys all traction and balance.
These crampons are quite specialized, but if you contemplate a lot of off-trail travel on non-technical ground where snow and ice have to be crossed, the light weight of these crampons is worth a great deal.

Hinged crampons provide flex at instep and bend with the natural motion walking and thus are the preferred style almost any type of mountaineering except steep ice climbing.

For travel on slopes consisting of ice or hard snow, crampons are a standard part of a mountaineer's equipment.
While crampons are an invaluable tool for a mountaineer, they were not used often until the development of plastic-shelled climbing boots, because the straps used to affix the crampons to early mountaineering boots (which were made of leather) had a tendency to restrict bloodflow to the feet of the wearer.
Do not wear crampons for a sitting glissade as catching a point in the snow is a very likely consequence.

Grivel North America - Products - Crampons
Rigid crampons -- combined with technical ice tools -- helped usher in the Golden Era of frozen waterfall climbing (and waterfall-type climbing in the mountains) during which the first ascents of many of the biggest Grade VI routes in the world were accomplished.
Both technique and terrain have evolved; while rigid crampons are still valuable for certain high-standard pure ice routes, semi-rigid models perform equally well on mixed routes of similar difficulty — and the most appropriate crampon may also be decided by the choice of footwear.
The variety of crampons available today is staggering but the type of climbing you choose to do generally determines the attributes required of your crampons.

Crampons are sets of metal spikes that attach to your boots so that they bite into ice that you are walking over.
Some crampons come with spikes that point forwards as well as down, these are for ice climbing and will allow you to ascend some quite outrageous slopes and walls (with the rest of the equipment needed too of course!).
Smaller versions are also sometimes available "instep crampons" that attach to the instep area of your boot, they are far better than nothing in icy and treacherous conditions, but a far cry from the ease of use and security that comes from a full foot multi-point crampon.

 Advice: Crampons
'Instep' crampons (which simply strap into the instep of a boot) will fit virtually any type of walking boot but are not widely seen these days, due to their extremely limited use and the false sense of security they could provide to wearers.
Their function is to prevent the dangerous build-up of snow that can stick to the underside of crampons in wet snow conditions, which if allowed to happen prevents the crampon points from working, leading to slips and stumbles.
The traditional remedy for this is to tap your crampons with your ice axe, but this can be very awkward (trying to balance on one leg), time consuming (you may need to tap you crampons after every single step), and distracting.
