  Dorset Downs and Cranborne Chase
Cranborne Chase is characterised by woodlands, shelterbelts, clumps and copses containing ancient hazel coppice and by enclosed areas of arable pasture and parkland.
In the east, Cranborne Chase was a royal hunting ground from at least the time of William the Conqueror until the 17th century.
Today many perceptions of the Dorset Downs and Cranborne Chase have been coloured by the writing of Thomas Hardy: Cranborne Chase was the 'venerable tract of forestland' in Tess of the d'Urbervilles.

Many of these chases passed from royal control but were still managed for the deer and hunting.
One of the last to be disfranchised was Cranborne Chase in 1829, and the landscape still reflects, particularly in the extent and character of its woodlands, the management for the hunt.
What is clear, nevertheless, is that woods and copses have been conserved as cover and sources of food for creatures of the chase and that the suggested drag hunting or chasing a human runner will not provide that reason or incentive to keep, manage, or plant such woods and copses.

This week Open Country is exploring the inspiration of landscape, in this case, Cranborne Chase in Dorset - the "venerable tract of forestland" in Thomas Hardy's Tess of the d'Urbervilles.
The Chase itself is a rolling chalkland landscape, with sheep scattering the uplands and mainly arable farming taking place in the valleys.
But the Chase is littered with evidence of Neolithic and Bronze-Age sites, including the Dorset Cursus, a place with many potential explanations but often thought to have been used for the exposure of the dead as part of burial rituals.
