Brake cable mounting structure for a drum brake - Patent 6325183
The crank mechanism 300 is positioned adjacent to the supporting portion 201 of the anchor 200 between the two brake shoes 110, 120.
The crank mechanism is disposed adjacent to a pair of adjacent facing ends of brake shoes moveably mounted on a back plate so as to actuate the brake shoes.
No projection on the anchor seat projecting toward the crank mechanism side (i.e., widened portion of the guide pipe in the conventional art) is necessary; therefore, the range of the effective stroke of the brake cable is increased.

Crank Brothers has stripped the design down to bare essentials: an axle, bearings, just enough metal to hold the bearings and a mechanism to engage and release the cleat.
Crank Brothers' trick is that two of the bars are part of the pedal's body, while the other two are spring-loaded and able to pivot round the axle.
Crank brothers claims the main advantages for the design are low weight, easy entry and mud-proofing.

A crank is a bent portion of an axle, or shaft, or an arm keyed at right angles to the end of a shaft, by which motion is imparted to or received from it; also used to change circular into reciprocating motion, or reciprocating into circular motion.
Familiar examples of a crank for manual use include the crank on a manual pencil sharpener and the crankset that drives a bicycle via the pedals.
Cranks were formerly common on some machines in the early 20th century; for example almost all phonographs before the 1930s were powered by clockwork motors wound with cranks, and internal combustion engines of automobiles were usually started with cranks before electric starters came into general use.

 Mechanism
Mechanism includes not only rigid links connected by rotating joints, but also cams and gears where the motion is transmitted by sliding surfaces, flexible cords, belts and chains, and logical elements, such as ratchets, trips, detents, escapements and interlocking mechanisms.
If we now connect the mechanism, so that the movement of the two cranks is simultaneously constrained by members 1 and 3, there will be one point with the same velocity in members 2 and 4, and it must lie at the intersection of the two lines 12,14 and 23,34.
The familiar and important crank-and-slider mechanism is a special case of the four-bar linkage where the radius of one crank is infinite, which means that the joint 34 moves on a straight line, as shown in the figure.

 Honda Worldwide | History
The control mechanism created through the joint effort, which turned the front and rear wheels in the same direction at high speeds but in opposing directions at low speeds, was initially conceived as a "speed-linked 4WS system"-a control mechanism directly dependent on the speed of the vehicle.
However, it all became a reality with the development of a new crank mechanism, which was designed to turn the wheels in the same direction initially but in opposite directions after a certain point.
With a single crank mechanism, the wheels could only be turned at certain instances, regardless of whether the front and/or rear wheels were turning in the same or opposite directions.

This mechanism consists of a flywheel (crank), connecting rod, and piston similar to the piston-crank mechanism in an internal combustion engine.
The disadvantage of using this mechanism is that it does not produce perfect sinusoidal motion in the piston, but having a longer connecting rod can compensate for this.
The advantage to this mechanism is its cost effectiveness because there is less high tolerance machining.

Option 2: Using a slider crank mechanism to rotate a disc by 360 degrees using a double acting hydraulic cylinder (similar to the automotive engine).
Looking at the mechanism setup you may have a real problem when the cylinder thrust on the Crank Mechanism passes Top or Bottom Dead Center, espaecially at such slow speeds.
Another problem with a Slider Crank mechanism is the fact that with a constant extension/retraction speed of the hydraulic cylinder the rotational speed would go from zero RPM at Top and Bottom Dead Center and constantly accelerate through half the extend stroke, then constantly decelerate through the second half of the extend stroke.
