Crankset - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The crankset is the component of a bicycle drivetrain that converts the reciprocating motion of the rider's legs into rotational motion used to drive the chain, which in turn drives the rear wheel.
Cheaper cranksets may have the chainrings welded or riveted directly to the crankarm.
A recent trend is a compromise between the standard road double crankset (with a 39 tooth and a 52 tooth chainrings) and the road triple (with 52, 42, and 30 tooth chainrings).

Bicycling - Tandems: drivetrains: build and customize your own tandem crankset   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-27)
On a tandem, cranksets with relatively large chainwheels are preferable to the newer mountain bike cranksets with tiny chainwheels.
Notice that both chains are on the right side of the tandem: the drive chain from the rear crankset to the rear wheel, and the synchronizing chain which connects the two cranksets.
Because the chain tension from the front crankset is transferred along the right side of the tandem through both chains, stresses on the bottom brackets and cranks are no higher than in solo bike use.

Ultra-Torque is the name given to the new range of Campagnolo cranksets and immediately puts the spotlight on the extraordinary ability of this crankset-bottom bracket combo to transfer torque.
Installing an Ultra-Torque crankset on your bike is amazingly straightforward: it involves screwing the two cups onto the frame and joining the two cranks together by means of a single screw.
The crankset can be disassembled in just a few seconds: unscrew the screw which unites the two semi-axles using the 10 mm socket wrench; pull the cranks off the bottom bracket shell; clean and lubricate the bearings again; and that's that!

 Crankset
The crankset, which includes all of the parts between the two pedals, is the bike's transmission, so to speak.
Crankset care, then, is about ensuring smooth power transfer.
Since most modern crankset systems contain sealed bearings, you don't need to lube the area or regrease the bearings.

As we stated in our review of their K-Force mountain crankset, the MegaExo design provides a very stiff pedaling platform by placing oversize bearings outboard of the bottom bracket shell.
If you are running a triple crankset or are looking for easier gears for the hills, you owe it to yourself to check out the SLK compact crankset.

Although we have not had the opportunity to test Campagnolo's crankset (Campagnolo does not provide items to us for testing, and we don't have $700 sitting around for a Record crankset), we have been riding a both non-Campy carbon crankset and Record alloy cranks for some time, giving us a point of comparison.
FSA advertises the weight of the crankset at 505 grams, almost the same as Campagnolo's 500-gram carbon crankset.
Shifting is on par with our other Campy cranksets, which is to say that the chain moves easily from the small to large ring with a minimum of fuss.

Arranging the carbon fiber in the cranksets was until now an exclusively craft activity and because of this results and performance within the same component could differ widely.
The chainrings with their ultra-drive geometry have been given a special new treatment that reduces attrition with the chain and improves resistance to wear.
Another important aspect of this new carbon-fiber crankset that should be emphasized is the Q factor: it is the same as for the aluminum version.

Layers of Unidirectional Carbon Fiber are then judiciously positioned to further enhance the already outstanding mechanical performance of the Chorus crankset.
The innovative factor is that this technology has transformed a traditionally manual process like the construction of carbon-fiber cranksets into an industrial process.
In this way, all the differences in terms of result and performance that are typical of the traditional manual processes have been eliminated.

I just got a flashy new cyclocross bike (which has horizontal dropouts and which is going to be my main fixie), but it has Race-Face diabolus cranks with a Q-factor the wrong side of 10cm.
I originally bought it for my cross bike, but the frame has an weird geometry a I would have had to use a 118mm bottom bracket to prevent it from hitting the chainstays, which would have killed the chainline.
My frame, a Soul Cycles Monk, is the only frame I have ever heard of having this problem and its because they designed it to use an MTB triple crankset instead of a road double.

FSA Compact Carbon Crankset--The Campy Only Test
Whether its the aging of the component-buying population or simply a realization that low gearing can be a good thing and not a sign of impending old age, the number of cyclists eschewing the old "39 teeth is low enough for me" school of thought.
Most current cranksets, which generally feature a 52- or 53-tooth large chainring and a 39-tooth small chainring, are primarily an artifact of the racing scene, where higher gears for sprinting are generally more important than low gears for climbing.
Our FSA crankset features chainrings of 50 and 34 teeth--in both cases a few teeth smaller than possible with a standard crankset due to the use of a 110mm bolt circle (Campagnolo's standard cranksets use a 135mm bolt circle).

This page, along with the associated pages, provides a method of estimating the correct length for a crankset for a given cyclist.
Crank length is the distance from the center of the crank axle to the center of the pedal axle, and is only one of dozens of variables involved in adjusting a bicycle to "fit" a rider properly.
