Cranwell (The name means the spring where the cranes are found) is a village with a population of approximately 3,000 inhabitants (part of the Civil Parish of Cranwell and Byard's Leap), situated in the North Kesteven district of Lincolnshire, England, on the B1429 road approximately 7km north-west of Sleaford.
Cranwell was first established in 1916 as the Navy air training centre HMS Daedalus, and airships were operational there until the end of World War I.
An independent heritage centre telling the story of RAF Cranwell may be visited near the village of North Rauceby, to the south east of the larger airfield.

As the naval personnel were held on the books of HMS Daedalus, a hulk that was moored on the River Medway, this gave rise to a misconception that Cranwell was first established as HMS Daedalus.
It was here that he formulated many of his ideas for the jet engine and it was at Cranwell on 15 May 1941, that the world's first true jet-engine flight took place of the Gloster E.28/39.

There's no question that former state legislator Richard Cranwell's name is now part of the inquiry into the brouhaha surrounding the funding of the National D-Day Memorial in Bedford.
They also agree that financial documents from National Cooperative Bank say Cranwell said the loan met criteria for the matching funds requirement, and that the state would pay the $4.2 million it had appropriated in matching funds to the foundation within two months of getting notice that the matching share requirement had been met.
But what Cranwell knew about what may have comprised the matching funds is unknown and will likely be disputed as part of Burrow's trial, scheduled for Dec. 9.

I was a student at the school from the fall of the 1944 until I graduated in the spring of 1948 and taught myself to ski on the hill there.
I wasn't as lucky as the two former Cranwell students who have previously reported to you because there was no lift in my day so I had to climb back up after each descent.
I should point out that in those days Cranwell had a strict rule against leaving the campus without permission which we didn't have and undoubtedly couldn't have gotten even if we had asked for it.
