From the opening line uttered by Don Cheadle we know this is to be a film about how people relate, and from the interchange that follows between Jennifer Esposito and Alexis Rhee (pretty sure she plays the Korean female driver who rear-ended her) how people relate tends to be ruled by first impressions or prejudice.
Clearly this film was his way of relieving those demons of memory, using the catharsis of his art to unleash them and in doing so has given to all viewers of cinema an opportunity to examine our own preconceptions about race relations and how we treat each other and think of ourselves.
Films that ask people to think after the film has ended and not just leave saying: "that was a nice film".

At the film’s opening we are introduced to a homicide detective named Graham (Don Cheadle) and his partner - both on the force and in bed - named Ria (Jennifer Esposito); both were just involved in a car crash atop the hills of Los Angeles (quite reminiscent of Mulholland Drive).
Crash is simply one of those golden pictures that you wish you could compel everyone in the world to watch.
At the beginning of the film, there is an amazing sequence, in which the camera sinks to the ground and wanders in between the blades of grass; this shot will surely both catch your eye and set your brain waves in motion.

 Film Scouts Reviews: Crash
I read J.G. Ballard's novel "Crash" just a couple of years ago, so it was fairly fresh in my mind as Cronenberg's adaptation unspooled, capturing the book's menacing weirdness while leaving out some of the thematic emphases that I'd thought Ballard was most interested in.
These include a detailed fascination with prosthetic devices (represented in the film mainly by Rosanna Arquette's scenes) and the notion of car accidents as "marriages" in which fleshly and mechanical beings become "one flesh" in a kind of technological matrimony.
"Crash" is major-league kinky in its obsession with the erotics of automotive violence and destruction, but as a movie it's a series of painstakingly correct shots and countershots that develop little aesthetic interest, much less adventurousness, despite the morbid goofiness of their narrative content.

Crash is an empathetic loner whose own sense of loss drives him, often frantically, to help others (a highlight comes in a surreal sequence wherein Crash attempts to talk down a young woman bent on jumping from the top of a tenement).
Hölzemann pushes the film at breakneck pace — the jolting shocks used to repeatedly revive heart attack victims throughout the film provide a cogent metaphor for German youth’s desperate need for another form of spiritual defibrillation, as the film builds to a shocking yet satisfying climax that verges on the otherworldly.

"Crash" is most assuredly not the best film of 2005 but it is, not at all coincidentally, the film that made audiences feel the best about themselves.
Crash went just far enough to make the majority of the audience feel they were confronting something (if only because they felt slightly uncomfortable), without ever really addressing any wider unfortunate truths.
As I commented in the film poll, this film really wants to be a great film and has many of the hallmarks for the kind of film it aspires to be, but it just isn't that film.

The premise of "Crash," Paul Haggis's multi-storied, multi-starred and very earnest directorial debut film, is that we are all prejudiced in some way or another.
For "Crash," that territory is Los Angeles, where myriad ethnic and racial populations live side by side but rarely interact, except in the colonial sense of servant and master.
Yet the film is obviously sincere — Haggis himself was a victim of the kind of carjacking he depicts — and his dialogue is way above average.
