  Movie: Crash (2005)
Crash is an articulate concept movie, an ambitious examination of Los Angeles race relations undertaken by an ensemble of gifted actors that includes Don Cheadle, Matt Dillon, Terrence Howard and half a dozen others at the top of their game.
The movie is a gross oversimplification of a serious issue that exploits every stereotype imaginable, cramming them all into a plot that moves from one white-knuckle scenario to the next with an almost disgusting self-importance.
Crash implies that racism would go away if people just took the time to interact with one another (although collisions are not the way to go), then lets audiences off easy, suggesting that watching a movie like this serves the same end.

  Movie Review - Crash (2005) - eFilmCritic
Crash may just be missing out on greatness by not going completely epic, but in terms of quality it certainly ranks somewhere in-between 2 Days in the Valley and Magnolia and that’s not too shabby.
Crash’s story structure may have one coincidence too many for skeptics ( both involving traffic malfeasances) but that shouldn’t allow them to dismiss such happenstance as an overriding suspension of their belief in the material.
Crash might have been served better by actually adding a further half-hour or so to the proceedings to flesh out a few of the plot strands.

Movie Review: Crash   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-29)
"Crash," a movie I liked, is an explosive, intimate ensemble drama set in an urban pressure cooker of racial and class hatreds.
And its flaws also are those of a writer's movie: a little too much neatness, patness and irony, and a bit too obvious a pattern.
"Crash" may have filched its title from David Cronenberg's 1996 film of the J.G. Ballard novel, and copied its structure from Robert Altman's "Short Cuts," but this is obviously the work of a highly original talent.

While the movie enforces the realization that many of us had that racism or at least, racist thoughts are a) an everyday occurrence that everyone has experienced at least a few hundred times and b) we are all victims of it, it still leaves a sour in your mouth.
This is not a movie where you leave feeling satisfied, like when the main characters finally realize that they love each other and run off into the sunset.
In this time of social and political unrest, Crash looks at the residue of post 9/11 racial profiling against Middle Easterners and also their reaction against what is perceived as their victimization from another marginalized group.

CRASH A film review by Steve Rhodes Copyright 2005 Steve Rhodes RATING (0 TO ****): *** CRASH, a movie set ironically during the Christmas season, would have much more aptly been called RACE, as its large and talented cast chews up the scenery, packing every sentence with some racial insult.
I came close to docking the movie two full stars for that shameless incident but decided in the end to ignore it entirely in my rating, since the film's acting is so universally superb.
Sandra Bullock, a wonderful actress who keeps signing up for bad movies, is never better than she is here as an uncontrollably angry housewife married to the District Attorney (Brendan Fraser).

Crash is a movie that understands this point of view.
Crash starts out as an exploration of prejudice in America.
However, it digs much deeper than you originally imagine, in an odd way overturning our prejudices about prejudice and showing how it may be ugly and it may be horrible, but it is not as fl and white as you imagine.

Movie Habit: Review of Crash (2005), ***   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-29)
Crash should be called “Let’s Talk about Race.” TV director Paul Haggis makes his feature film debut as both writer and director of Crash, an issue movie on the subject of race relations in Los Angeles.
On the other, if you are open and receptive, Crash is the start of a serious dialogue about race issues, particularly in L.A. Haggis borrows heavily from movies like 21 Grams, Amores Perros, and Traffic where, instead of an overarching plot, the movie uses a theme to tie together several short stories.
Although there are probably several crashes on any given day in L.A. the likelihood of them all coming together in such a tidy way is obviously contrived and a little distracting.

If you haven’t seen the movie or its very limited advertisements, "Crash" is a movie about the effect that race has on the everyday lives of a diverse group of people living in Los Angeles.
In the movie two fl men (Ludacris and Lorenz Tate) are leaving an expensive restaurant in an apparently affluent section of LA. Ludacris' character (who surprisingly showed up the veteran actor Tate) questioned Tate on the reason why the white people surrounding them were scared when they were the only two fl people around.

Crash can't rise from the ashes of its pessimism.
Concludes in a shower of ashes, which is fitting because this movie is a billowing bonfire of ugly human behavior.
A frustrating movie: full of heart and devoid of life; crudely manipulative when it tries hardest to be subtle; and profoundly complacent in spite of its intention to unsettle and disturb.

In ``Crash,'' a woman is referred to as a ``Mexican'' by two people before she indignantly informs one of them -- the man with whom she has just had sex -- that her parents actually were Puerto Rican and Salvadoran.
``Crash'' begins with the aftermath of a traffic accident, which actually turns out to be the final collision between the film's dozen or so principal characters.
The truth is, we don't like each other very much, and the truth that ``Crash'' reckons with is that, in the safe enclosure of our cars, or our living rooms, we make easy assumptions and hard judgments about people we don't really know.

The many characters in Crash, however, do not have the same advantage as your average stealthy Canadian living in Hollywood: unable to hide their roots, the film’s subjects face persecution and racism from all sides, and constitute an Altmanesque ensemble piece that examines nearly every facet of minority life in California.
The storylines follow a path that we are led to believe is the movie’s inevitable conclusion, and they rely heavily upon convention.
Themes and character studies work best when they are at least somewhat hidden from view and are allowed to breathe on their own outside of a larger directorial scheme.

The result is a movie both intense and thought provoking.
It’s the sort of film you wish you could force everyone to see, it leaves you with the perhaps painfully naïve conviction that if only enough people saw it, then the world might be a better place to live in.
Crash paints a picture not of fl and whites, but foggy grays and rips apart the racial barriers thrown between us.

What amazes me is how powerful the cast is both individually and collectively (as the movie is based on our "collisions" with each other, sometimes racially motivated, on a daily basis), every character has a purpose and an impact on the audience.
The movie will certainly provoke conversation and introspection about racial prejudices and how some of us, often without knowing it, make costly assumptions based on the color of one's skin.
It doesn't feel too preachy, either, as the characters that are "bad" are shown to also be good and the characters that are "good" are also shown to be bad, effectively giving the characters a grey shade instead of fl and white.
