Major archaeological projects in the county have included several studies of the cemeteries and habitation areas of the Black Freedmen's community of James City, plus projects on and around the grounds of Tryon Palace.
Craven County was surveyed with Historic Preservation Office guidance in the early 1980s, resulting in the publication of The Historic Architecture of New Bern and Craven County, North Carolina.

On August 15, 1961, a tall young native of Cumberland County, Thurman E. Brock, was employed as Director of Vocational Education for the Craven County School System.
While Craven Community College did not yet exist, its formation in 1963 was developing under the sponsorship of the Lenoir County Industrial Education Center, soon to being its first year of operation of Lenoir Community College.

One commissioner race in Craven County has gone back and forth like a see saw, and it's still not settled.
The two candidates of Craven County's 5th District, incumbent Democrat Leon Staton and Republican challenger Anthony Michalek, will have to wait until next week to find out who wins.
On election night, county election officials said Anthony Michalek had won by only 35 votes, but after recounting the votes due to a computer error, it showed that Commissioner Staton was in the lead.
