The 325-square-mile county was created on December 9, 1822, from Houston County, which had been formed from land given up by the Creek Indians in the 1821 Treaty of Indian Springs.
According to the 2000 U.S. census, the county population was 12,495 (72.9 percent white, 23.8 percent fl, and 2.4 percent Hispanic), a 39 percent increase since 1990.
This increase is due to the county's proximity to the rapidly expanding city of Atlanta, which makes Crawford County an attractive location for bedroom communities.
