 Crayford
The Domesday Book (1086) records that in Crayford ‘there is a church’, implying that there was a well established settlement in the area by that time.
Crayford Manor House stands just to the north-west of St Paulinus Church, probably in roughly the same position as the first manor house, which was established in the 14th century.
Housebuilding was interrupted by the Second World War, which affected Crayford badly because the presence of the Royal Arsenal nearby (see Thamesmead) and of the armaments works in the town made Crayford an obvious target for enemy bombers.

 Crayford Family Crest
Crayford is a topographic surname, which was given to a person who resided near a physical feature such as a hill, stream, church, or type of tree.
The name Crayford is derived from the Old English words crawa, which means crow, and ford, which means river crossing, and indicates that the original bearer lived near a ford where crows nested.
In the Crayford coat of arms as in all coat of arms the crest is only one element of the full armorial achievement.

An Easy to Make, Single-piece Crayford-type Focuser
The rack and pinion type focuser is fine for refractors and Cassegrains, but to be stable, is often made a bit taller than many people would like on their Newtonian reflectors - not to mention the difficulties encountered in constructing a smooth working unit without a broaching tool or shaper for the rack's keyway.
These work very well, can be constructed with simple hand tools, and can be made with a very low profile, but I have been unhappy with the ungainly looks and obvious moisture and dust leaks to the interior of the telescope tube that is inherent to the design.
