Rails is a faithful PC adaptation of the Eurorails board game from Mayfair Games, designed by Darwin Bromley.
A large deck of cards is used to determine how much money will be generated by picking up a particular commodity and delivering it to the listed city, with the payoffs being related to how far away the source is from the destination.
It may not look as polished or offer as many options as Rail Empires: Iron Dragon, the shareware game from Eden Studios that is officially licensed by Mayfair Games, but Rails already offers a lot of play value and virtually infinite replayability thanks to the random map option.

The chief said he'd like to believe Crayon took that action - which the police division warns officers is unsafe - to save the life of a child.

Australian Rails review, by Tom Vasel
Russian Rails was my first foray into the world of "crayon railway" games, and I enjoyed it enough that I picked up some miniature trains from Mayfair to run on my tracks.
When I got Australian Rails (Mayfair Games, 2005 - Larry Roznai), I was once again pleased to be playing on a continent that I was unfamiliar with, because it's more interesting to me and a bit educational, too.
Australian Rails really was an enjoyable game for me; and although it's only my second game of the series, I look forward with interest to playing more.

Rail (railway/railroad) games are sufficiently popular to form their own sub-genre of board games.
Most Railway games fall into three main categories: the 18xx, Crayon Rails and Railway Rivals families.
There are some other games do not fit into any category (as designers strive to come up with brand new designs for games).

I used this map editor to create a map of Europe (west of Moscow), a map of Washington state (US) with a little bit of British Columbia, Idaho, and Oregon, and a map of the northeastern United States with roughly the same extent as the 1830 board game map.

Over time we've adopted (or invented) certain variant rules for the crayon rails games.
A few of these rules variants are reflected in the payoffs used in our randomly generated decks, and so we think it's worth describing them here.
As with the switchback builds, we see no reason these variants shouldn't be allowed even in games where they were not explicitly suggested in the rules.

 Game Review: British Rails
British Rails is one of a series of games commonly referred to as 'crayon' games, simply because they use crayons to create the railroad networks of each player on a specially coated surface that lets you wipe the board clean after each game.
The board depicts a map of the British isles, over which is laid a grid of dots, or mileposts, which the players use to layout their track.
A rule used in Empire Builder, is that the major cities must be built to, as well as having 250 million in cash, and this is also recommended to be used in British Rails, although the rule is only listed as an option.

Many of my friends and I play the various and famous Mayfair "crayon rails" games, so when I saw Air Baron in a neighborhood game store, I decided to give it a try.
The game can tend to start slowly (due to the low amount of starting cash; possibly as low as $2), but once it gets going and people are wrestling back and forth over air hubs, the game can quickly turn into an everyone for themselves fight for dominance.
Always having been an avid crayon rail-gamer, I actually prefer this game to those because of the interaction between players, and the ability to suddenly spring ahead (or be forced down) due to a well-timed takeover of a major hub.

Answer: Because players use a crayon or similar marker to mark construction of railroad tracks on the map.
At the end, the crayon marks can be wiped clean from the board's smooth surface.

Introduction to Mayfair's ``Empire Builder'' games   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
There are virtually no cards that will get you a profit where you have no line, so it is vital to build a line that services multiple contracts.
The reason I rate Nippon Rails and British Rails lower is that they both have certain strategic corridors, possession of which makes life difficult for the other player.
I think this is because there are more big contracts, and the siren call of those big cards can put you way over---or leave you way short when the other player goes over.
