Topic: Crazy quilting

  History of crazy quilting.
The beginning of crazy quilting history is hard to know exactly as its been an evolution of many techniques from many decades.
Women who were wealthy had a lot of time on their hands to sew as opposed to the poor women who had to care for their homes and children; or whether crazy quilting is actually older than that with its roots embedded in the creation of America and its early pioneer days.
Some historians claim crazy quilting originated from the Japanese "cracked ice" china design that became popular about the same time as the embellishing of crazy quilts evolved, but however it evolved, crazy quilting has become an art form now as opposed to just a pioneer work of necessity.

Crazy quilting - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The term "crazy quilting" is often used to refer to the textile art of crazy patchwork and is sometimes used interchangeably with that term.
Crazy quilting does not actually refer to a specific kind of quilting (the needlework which binds two or more layers of fabric together), but a specific kind of patchwork.
In comparison to standard quilts, crazy quilts are far more likely to use exotic pieces of fabric, such as velvet, satin, tulle, or silk, and embellishments such as buttons, lace, ribbons, beads, or embroidery.

Quilting is a method of sewing or tying two layers of cloth with a layer of insulating batting in between.
Quilts made during the early 1800s were not constructed of pieced blocks but instead whole cloth quilts, broderie perse quilts and medallion quilts were made.

At one time many people attributed the beginnings of the crazy quilt to as early as the arrival of the colonists to the new world, it's advent was supposed to have risen out of the scarcity of fabric and the use of every little scrap.
The quilt bee was a party as much if not more than a working occasion and a lady made every effort to put on her best for her friends and neighbors.
Quilt Bees still take place today though they are more likely to take the form of a church or charity organization which quilts to raise funds for well deserving causes than as the social occasion which also resulted in the completion of a necessary but tedious task.

 Inspired Crazy Piecing
Crazy piecing came into its own in the late 1800s as women hand-stitched the somber silk and velvet scraps from their Victorian finery into elaborately embroidered quilts and coverlets.
Nowadays most crazy piecing is done with ordinary calicos, small prints, and solid cottons, often taken from selected yardage rather than miscellaneous scraps, which is pieced by machine and embroidered by hand or with decorative machine-embroidery stitches.
But in most traditional and some contemporary crazy piecing, the fabric scraps, often chosen for their muted colors, are applied to a muslin foundation cut either to the size of the whole quilt or in blocks to be assembled later.
