  CRAZY RHYTHMS R.I.P.
Mike Mendlovitz remembers as a teenager that he and his father, then a law professor, would frequently stop at Crazy Rhythms music store on their way home as a matter of habit.
Mendlovitz bought his first rock albums, "Country Joe and the Fish" and "Question Mark and the Mysterians" at Crazy Rhythms, he said.
After 24 years of selling the music that many consider classics, Provenzano has decided to close Crazy Rhythms for good on Sunday, Jan. 16.

Crazy Rhythms sounds almost like it is being performed by incredibly precise wind-up toys; one is sort of shocked to think that humans are capable of performing this music.
While Crazy Rhythms is undoubtedly their best and most influential album, I find that my favorite Feelies song is always the one I'm listening to at that particular moment; which album its on doesn't really matter.
I think of Only Life as a sort of distilled version of Crazy Rhythms and Time for a Witness is the same for The Good Earth.

Crazy Rhythms, while not one of the biggest-selling records of all time, is one of the more obvious places to discover the origins of what would come to be called "indie" or "alternative" rock in the 1980s.
Like Talking Heads, the rhythms - vocally and musically - were tense and nervous, but with a menacing quality that may have been somewhat muted in the Heads' music by their art school/world music aspirations.
It was issued in 1980 on the one of the earliest indie labels, Stiff and subsequently the influence of "Crazy Rhythms" has long outlived the lifespan of the Feelies.

 PUNKCAST#399 Crazy Rhythms @ Motherfucker! - Centro Fly - NYC - Feb 15 2004
Crazy Rhythms is Dan Selzer, prop, of Acute Records, affable caretaker of the nyhappenings list, and his buddy Mike Simonetti aka Mr.Troubleman Unlimited.
Dan's passion for the dancier end of post-punk is a pillar of the NYC scene, while Mike is a bit of a loose cannon - with a strong affinity for classic soul, funk, and hiphop, he likes a good freakout.
So, when the two of them get together as Crazy Rhythms a good time is pretty much guaranteed, even without the aforementioned monster sound system and wall to wall crowd..

This awkward approach to rhythm - with drummer Anton Fier taking care of tom-toms - would actually be indicative of both the band's love for a primal pulse and Fier's original views.
And so the band stutters, stumbles, twitches its way through Crazy Rhythms, one moment with the concise revved-up nonsense of single "Fa Cé-La" and a moment later with the hypnotic groove of the lengthy "Forces at Work," which is a great showcase for the band's semi-demented garage guitar.
Apart from that, Crazy Rhythms is an intriguing document at the transition of two paradigms in rock and still as fresh and exciting as it must've been 25 years ago.

It was playing “music with crazy rhythms,” he said, “and meaning it.” In truth there were few crazy rhythms in Plant’s performance with his new band The Strange Sensation; just an awful lot of 4/4 bombast, hammered out with brutal efficiency.
He and his former colleague, Jimmy Page, may have been seduced throughout their musical careers by the lilting rhythms and sinuous melodies of India and north Africa, but it is absolutely not what made them famous.
The world’s problems are not going to be solved by people playing crazy rhythms, and meaning it, but it is a small indicator that we are travelling in the right direction.

Even the cover is a winner, with a washed-out look that screams new wave via horn-rimmed glasses, even more so than contemporaneous pictures of either Elvis Costello or the Embarrassment.

Otherwise, you probably wouldn't hear guitar unless you were specifically hunting for it in the mix, because it makes for just as much of a percussive element as the drums.

The Feelies formed in the late 70s in New Jersey but quickly gained buzz in New York City as one of the most exciting bands in the city’s emerging new wave scene.
The 1980 album Crazy Rhythms was a commercial failure but would go on to inspire countless young bands.
The band suffered line-up changes and periods punctuated by on-and-off action but kept the core songwriting duo of Mercer and Million intact until the band skittered to a halt in 1991 with Million’s abrupt departure to Florida.
