Las Vegas Mercury: Music: Shine on, crazy Diamond Dave
With the release of 1984--arguably Van Halen's finest work--the two were already on the outs (a situation exacerbated by the release of Roth's solo EP Crazy from the Heat), and Roth soon found himself without a band to front.
Rather than fade into the annals of rock 'n' roll obscurity, though, Roth swathed himself in the chrysalis of reinvention and emerged as Diamond Dave--a dim-witted, libido-driven surfer dude bent on recapturing his lost glory.
Just as Van Halen was installing Sammy Hagar in his stead, Diamond Dave was scoring hits with gaudy, overblown covers of the Beach Boys' "California Girls" and Vegas lounge crooner Louis Prima's "Just a Gigolo/I Ain't Got Nobody" medley.

Amazon.com: Diamond Dave: Music: David Lee Roth
This album expands on the concept of 1985s Crazy From the Heat, which was an EP of cover songs.
On this release, Roth interprets great rock n' roll tunes by Steve Miller, Jimi Hendrix, the Doors, the Beatles, and Savoy Brown, to name a few, invigorating them with his infamous Diamond Dave attitude.
Considering the oeuvre, to call this the best pop album of David Lee Roth's star-crossed solo career might risk damning it with faint praise.

 David Lee Roth
In 1985 David Lee Roth released Crazy From the Heat, an EP of cover songs that scored big with versions of Cab Calloway's Just a Gigolo and The Beach Boys' California Girls (the video for the latter thoroughly investigating the possibilities of how much T&A can be squeezed into three minutes of film).
The resulting 1978 debut release Van Halen proved to be a huge success with the heavy rock crowd - as much for the music as for the reputation for excess surrounding the band (a reputation largely resulting from the on- and off-stage antics the singer).
Spawned of a schoolteacher and an ophthalmologist, David Lee Roth entered the world in the Monroe County town of Bloomington- and the future of the spandex industry was insured as a result.
