 Discussion Forum: Smokey Black
A chestnut with the cream gene is a palomino, a bay with the cream gene is a buckskin, but a black with the cream gene can appear to be black although it is actually a smoky black.
Because the Cream gene is an incomplete dominant it does not affect black pigment physically unless it is present in homozygous form.
However the cream gene is still present and can produce palominos from a smoky black to chestnut mating.

Dun Central Station - The Cute Conundrum
Silver Smoke was shown to carry the cream gene, proving that he is a smoky black (a black horse carrying cream- remember, cream in its heterozygous form does not affect black hair).
Until as recently as fifteen years ago, many color geneticists believed the cream dilutes (palomino, buckskin, smoky black, cremello, perlino, and smoky creme) and the dun dilutes (red dun, bay dun, and grulla) were caused by a single gene at the D (dilution) locus.
She would have to have been carrying the creme gene to have produced as she did, but grullas with the creme gene are usually a somewhat lighter shade of grulla (sometimes called silver grulla).

Cream hamsters also make acceptable mates for some of the rarer colours, (Copper, Ivory, etc.), due to the gene being an integral part of the colour.
For example, Copper, Ivory, Sable and Mink hamsters are all produced by the interaction of the Cream gene, (e), with another gene or genes.
"Cream", as it is usually abbreviated was the first "self" colour to arise, (since White is not, technically, a colour).

Thus, since the cream foal will shed out darker (the reverse of champagne in which the foals shed out lighter), and the eye color of the foals is not the bright blue characteristic of champagne, I have concluded that this family group is probably a very light variation of the palomino (cream) dilution.
Horses from the "champagne" dilution are born with bright blue eyes which are much lighter than the grayish-blue, navy blue, or steel colored eyes many foals from other dilutes are born with.
Champagne on bay produces a gold body with chocolate points called "amber champagne", which if the points are very dark will likely be confused with the buckskin color.

Ivory champagne is a term used to describe a champagne with a cream dilution gene-- a palomino or buckskin with champagne.
Since the term Ivory champagne can be somewhat misleading as there are many different dilution combinations, it is best to call the horses by 'proper' terms, such as 'palomino champagne' for a horse with a Cr and Ch gene, or "amber dun" for an amber champagne with a dun gene.
These horses used to be confused with other colors, and many amber champagnes were called 'lilac dun', although they may or may not have had a dun gene along with the champagne gene.
