Creation and annihilation operators - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-11)
A creation operator is an operator that increases the number of particles in a given state by one, and it is the adjoint of the annihilation operator.
The mathematics behind the creation and the annihilation operators is identical as the formulae for ladder operators that appear in the quantum harmonic oscillator.
(f) is the creation operator, and a(f) is the annihilation operator.

When the left operand of the operator is of a signed integral type, the operator performs an arithmetic shift right wherein the value of the most significant bit (the sign bit) of the operand is propagated to the high-order empty bit positions.
The result of the operation e is T, where e is an expression and T is a type, is a Boolean value indicating whether e can successfully be converted to type T by a reference conversion, a boxing conversion, or an unboxing conversion.

The operator class, a Node subclass, is a generalized Node extended to perform operations on other nodes.
Operators have two additional responsibilities as well: they must return a precedence (to tell the parser the proper order of operators) and a description (usually corresponding to the algebraic representation of the operator).
Each operator is free to modify the stack as it wishes (the definition of an operator), allowing postfix, prefix, unary, binary, multi-argument, indefinite-argument, and many other types of operators to be implemented easily.

Thus we obtain, upon quantization, creation and annihilation operators for particles and antiparticles in the spin states (r).
Upon quantization, this problem persisted --- while the particles associated with the b creation and annihilation operators each contribute the positive energy \hbar \omega_k, those associated with the c creation and annihilation operators naively seem to each contribute the negative energy -\hbar \omega_k.
This made the number operators for the c-type particles (that is, the antiparticles) appear in the Hamiltonian with positive sign.

 More on Quantum Field Theory
These creation and annihilation operators are very similar to those defined for the quantum harmonic oscillator, which added and subtracted energy quanta.
In fact, the answer is yes: they are operators acting on a kind of expanded Hilbert space, known as a Fock space, composed of the space of a system with no particles (the so-called vacuum state), plus the space of a 1-particle system, plus the space of a 2-particle system, and so forth.
One may notice from this that applying a fermionic creation operator twice gives zero, so it is impossible for the particles to share single-particle states, in accordance with the exclusion principle.

the creation operator of the quantum harmonic oscillator (its counterpart, the annihilation one as well) is characterized through its (spatial) tranlational invariance property.

So the Fock space -- again spanned by energy eigenstates -- again contains a vacuum with no particles, which is annihilated by all the annihilation operators, as well as states with particles and antiparticles in them, obtained mathematically by operating on the vacuum with various creation operators.
However, a major difference from the Fock space of bosons arises when we try to apply the creation operator for a single state twice, to doubly occupy a single particle or antiparticle state.
Since the creation operator anticommutes with itself, its square must be zero: that is, applying the creation operator twice to the vacuum always annihilates it.

[2.19], [2.20], and [2.21], an arbitrary string of annihilation and creation operators can be written as a linear combination of normal-ordered strings (most of which contain reduced numbers of operators) multiplied by Kronecker delta functions.
The final combination where A is an annihilation operator and B is a creation operator is not zero, however, due to the anticommutation relations in Eq.
The composite string of annihilation and creation operators may then be rewritten using Wick's theorem as an expansion of normal-ordered strings.

Whether it be in oil and gas, chemical, power, or pharmaceutical industry, issues of data migration, operations and maintenance integration, and data hand-off continue to vex even the most forward thinking corporations.
Consequently, it is often the case that the plant was created in one version of software and the update is created in another version or another system entirely, depending on what tool the EPC might have used.
While plant creation software sales to EPCs continue to make up the majority of plant creation spending, the portion of sales to owner/operators has nearly doubled since 1998, going from approximately 22% then to 39% of total spending in 2003.

There is no International Council for the Correct Use of Symbols in Mathematical Equations and you won't go to jail if you denote a creation operator without a dagger.
However, there are certain *conventions* that should be followed, one of these is to write the creation operators with a dagger.
The Caltech page gives the commutator of a and a^\dagger to be 1, so a is the annihilator and a^\dagger is the creator, as demonstrated a bit further down on the page.
