  Creature House Expression 2.4.1
Expression 2 is a program that tries to merge two very different approaches to digital art: raster painting and vector illustration.
Expression 2 from Creature House is the direct descendent of Fractal Design Expression from the company formerly known as MetaCreations.
For those unfamiliar, Expression is a program allows you to paint strokes with vectors--including support for pressure tablets--with a broad variety of stroke styles, from simple objects to strokes that look like wet paint strokes.

 Expression Hints & Tips
You have probably found out that if you try and subtract one shape from another, unless they are both very simple shapes (rectangles) then Expression tends to add in many extra points and quite often distorts the shapes, leaving a lot of tidying up to be done.
Because Expression eraser mode only works at the layer level, if you need objects to be seen through the cutout, just place them on their own layer, at a lower level (otherwise they will be cutout as well)
Expression comes with a whole swag of predefined brush strokes, though it is very easy to create your own and inject your own personal style into your drawings.

 Macworld: Review: Expression 3
Back in 1997, Expression 1 was the first vector-graphics tool to employ full transparency, as well as soft-edged strokes that didn't require any rasterizing (conversion to bitmap images).
Expression uses what its developers call skeletal strokes, user-definable brush styles that let you string vector or bitmap images along a path.
New to Expression 3 are fringe textures -- vector-based edges that simulate water-blotting effects on paper.

creativepro.com - Expression 2: Natural Media the Vector Way
Expression combines the organic textures and imperfect forms of natural-media brushes with the crisp precision of vector drawing.
Creature House also seems to have put some effort into making the price right: Expression 2 (we tested version 2.2) sells for a mere $149 ($139 for the downloaded version).
And however tempting it may be, don't write this software off as simply a natural-media specialty solution: Expression 2 is powerful and versatile enough to compete toe to toe with other vector illustration apps in all the areas you'd expect such a program to handle gracefully.

PC Pro: Product Reviews: Creature House Expression 3
Expression 3 might be an unusual drawing program, but it's still built on the foundations of lines and shapes.
Expression 3's bitmap fills, pixel-based soft edges and bitmap-based skeletal strokes help produce more naturalistic and artistic end results, but they cause a problem.
Creature House is pushing the feature for setting up Manga-style comic book action lines, but they're useful for much more than this.

Expression 3's bitmap fills, pixel-based soft edges and bitmap-based skeletal strokes help produce more naturalistic artistic end results but they cause a problem as, unlike vectors, bitmaps aren't resolution-independent and scalable.
As such, Expression 3's new ability to export PNG files with transparency and especially Photoshop PSD files with layers is the most likely output route.

 creativepro.com - Expression 3: Illustration Tools Meet Natural-Media Brushes
Creature House Expression is a sleek and engaging illustration application that lets you "paint" vector shapes and strokes.
More importantly, Expression allows both lines and fills to have the soft, blurry, blendable edges so necessary for creating the realistic effects that are the hallmark of image-editing programs such as
But in Expression, all the strokes are vector paths, so editing is simply a matter of adjusting the nodes that make up the path (see figure 2).

Expression might be an unusual drawing program, but it is still built on the fundamental building blocks of lines and shapes.
With Expression you can turn any object(s) into a brush and then drape this along the path (or "skeletal stroke" as Creature House terms the technology).
Expression comes with a small range of tileable textures and you can interactively drag these into position and scale and rotate the effect with the new Transform Fill tool.

Expression (which had 2 independent versions prior to the MS purchase) is a vector oriented program for those who prefer to "paint" using the bitmap features of Painter or Photoshop.
Basically, Expression is a very powerful drawing program whose main advantage is that it can generate surprisingly natural-looking painting effects, from pastels to water colors to whatever you thought you could only accomplish with Painter.

Expression 3 is complex and powerful software, with a somewhat overwhelming number of commands, palettes and controls, but fortunately (for me at least) the basic drawing model is simple, and it's not necessary to know every detail and function in order to begin creating pictures.
Expression documents can be saved in the native format, copied to other applications through the clipboard, exported to other vector and bitmap formats, and as output to a printer.
Expression documents are saved in the Expression file format, which uses the file extension of .xpr. You can choose to save Expression files in binary or text format, and include a thumbnail image with size of up to 64x64 pixels if you want.

Expression was originally part of Fractal Designs’ banner of creative software designed for those that wished to turn the computer into a art studio.
To give you an idea of what Expression is, well in short, Expression is to Adobe Illustrator what Painter 7 by Procreate is to Adobe Photoshop.
Even with this “little” quirks and an odd menu, Expression ranks as a major creative tool that I cannot imagine any designer not wanting to add to his or her arsenal of applications.

Kurt von Behrmann reviews Creature House Expression 3
Using their own graphic engine, Expression was able to do what few applications dared, and with a great degree of power.
Expression, as well as Painter, were both extensions of the idea that computer-based tools could and should be accessible to artists.
While the design philosophy behind Expression was to create a relatively easy-to-use application with power to spare, I found that Expression, while not the most difficult program to use, still has a steep learning curve.

Now Creatures 2 is available, and fans of the original (those already deeply embedded in the Norn world) will most likely be ardently moved and satisfied.
The environment your Norns live in is a large and detailed humanized burrowing habitat with everything from plants (medicinal and otherwise) and animals to electronic devices and toys to interact with, and the interface in which you use these items is relatively intuitive.
What Creatures 2 delivers is more of what the original Creatures introduced: a membership to a culture dedicated to the concept of artificial life and the intricacies of making it work in its controlled chaos environment.

Microsoft is not waiting for or relying on the traditional graphics heavyweights like Adobe, Corel, Macromedia (soon to be a part of Adobe) and Ulead to bring their tools to the Windows Vista environ; but rather are leading with fairly innovative tools in the 2D bitmap/vector, 2D and 3D animation and Web development spaces.
Expression Designer, though copying many of the commands of Adobe Photoshop, is really much closer to Macromedia Fireworks or Xara X1 which also straddle the bitmap and vector design worlds.

Expression is not your typical vector graphics app; the interface, though stylish, is unconventional, and some of the palettes are not intuitive.
Expression contains many standard drawing and painting accoutrements, including freehand and Bezier pen, text, and b-spline tools, as well as features like editable strokes, onion skinning, embossing, transparent gradients, light effects, paper textures, layers, blending modes, warping, Flash export, and more.
