It is a station on the North Devon line, and is situated in the northern division of the county, on the W. branch of the river Creedy, and upon the road from Exeter to Barnstaple and South Melton.
Crediton is also the head of a Poor-law Union, and of a superintendent registry, and a polling-place for the N. parliamentary division of Devonshire.
The locality of Crediton is proved by returns made to the registrar-general to be one of the moat healthy places in the kingdom, and many of its inhabitants have attained the age of 100 years.

By the mid-1990s it was becoming very apparent that the peal of eight bells, cast in Crediton by John Pennington and Co (Tenor 27½ cwt-recast by Thomas Mears in 1814) was in urgent need of attention.
As the frame was already designed and installed as a twelve bell frame this was a relatively simple project and Crediton bells became twelve on the 16 January 2007.
The restoration of the bells has led to a resurgence of interest in bell ringing at Crediton and all twelve bells are rung regularly.

Crediton was the birthplace of St. Boniface, around AD 680 and it is suggested that, despite his departure for Germany, he influenced the founding here of a monastery in AD 739.
The Lady Chapel and Chapter House survive from 13th century additions, but the majority of the church was being replaced, with what we see today, by around 1410.
The canons were ejected from their college at the Dissolution, but the people of Crediton purchased the church and some of its associated rights for £300.
