Membership in the WRCC is not a prerequisite for participation in the Waterway Net, but a general class or higher license is required.
Waterway Net members are known for their love of the water, boating and ham radio.

The goal of the proposed project is to study the ecological and geomorphological effects caused by the reduction in length of dirt causeways (accompanying bridge replacement) over a tidal waterway (Cowan Creek) and marsh in Beaufort County, South Carolina.
Construction of bridges over wide inland waterways, such as Cowan Creek, have historically involved the construction of dirt causeways (i.e., elongated highway embankments) to reduce the length, and therefore the cost of the bridge.

The head of the Middle Waterway adjacent to 11th Street East in one of the original mudflats of Commencement Bay is an intertidal area providing resting areas for migrating salmon, foraging areas for birds and small mammals, and tidal zone habitat for crabs and other shellfish.
The head of the waterway is owned by Simpson Tacoma Kraft (east shore) and the City of Tacoma (west shore).
The fish passage in the creek remains open, but stormwater flooding contributes to a loss of spawning habitat and a decrease in water quality.

A temporary final rule was published in the Federal Register on the March 31, 2005 (70 FR 16413) which established a safety zone that extended 100 yards on either side of the Fourth Street Bridge during the final phase of construction.
This safety zone is to affect a waterway closure during periods of reconstruction of the Fourth Street Bridge and would be effective 24 hours a day between January 1, 2006 and September 1, 2006.
