Topic: Creep (film)

  Creep : film review
Creep, the debut feature by British director Christopher Smith, relishes its vivid setting and attempts to scare the bejesus out of us - to mixed effect.
Up until then the only signs are the rising body count, chilling high pitched squeals and a telltale little plague of rats whenever he is in the vicinity.
The revelation of the Creep's origin is quite intriguing, but poses as many questions as it answers.

In every scene of Creep there was a gripping intensity and a level of originality in delivery missing in most films of the last few years.
Having read the review of Creep my only concern is that it is too flattering on a movie which shows, in a pretty graphic way, how not to make a movie or how to make a really bad one.
I'm no film critic or film buff, but I don't think it takes one to know this film was crap.

Creep is one of the worst horror films to come out of Britain for a long time and after the successes of films like Dog Soldiers, it seems like a backwards step for the British horror industry.

Creep (2004): Franke Potente, Sean Harris, Vas Blackwood, Jeremy Sheffield - PopMatters Film Review
Creep quickly establishes a sinister mood, opening as style guru Kate (Franke Potente) ditches a late-night office social (and the advances of a cocky coworker), to go party hopping.
The film briefly sputters here, with an improbable and upsetting sexual confrontation, but the darkness holds a predator far more terrifying and the film twists into some grisly, unfamiliar territory.

The look of the film is characterised by grimy, badly framed and unfocused shots that are hapharzardly thrown up on the screen with little sense of pacing.
The decision to shoot the film in scope was also an unwise one, for all too often the main action is clustered into a traditional 1.85:1 area.
The best element of the film, surprisingly, it not the creature, who turns out to be a bizarre approximation of Gollum from The Lord of the Rings and the demon from Hellraiser, but rather the sound design, which is often inspired, adding some atmosphere to what would otherwise be a very flat film.

Several other scenes in the film's underworld were shot in a disused German fort.

Creep is a simple chase film, which is what one should expect from a movie shot entirely in the London Underground.
This film is not going to break any new ground in the genre, but, that is not always a bad thing, especially when the outcome is this satisfying.
What makes the film work is that you have empathy for not only Potente but also for those other peripheral characters she encounters in her effort to escape.

 Creep London Movie Review
The first half of Creep is suspenseful and extremely effective, largely thanks to the familiarity of its location and set-up, since drunkenly falling asleep and missing the last tube home is, of course, a fear that anyone can relate to.
Inevitably, then, the film falls apart once the Creep is actually revealed and Smith jettisons suspense in favour of gore and general creepiness.
The problem is that the Creep itself is actually rather silly and the film lacks the inventive touch of Death Line, which had the plaintive cry of “Mind the Doors!” as the only words the creature knew.

The main argument that I can see against the extra long credit sequences (and one alluded to but not really explored in the article) is that it goes against Auteur Theory.
Auteur theory is an often-debated concept in film theory that states that even though dozens or thousands of people may contribute to the production of a movie the final result is really the realization of the vision of the director and therefore the director should be given the principal credit.
And a purely superficial appreciation I have for credit creep is the opportunity to hear more of the movie's soundtrack by itself.

This turns out to be a big mistake, as her night of passion with Gorgeous George becomes something the press release would desperately like to be 'a frightening descent into the shadowy world of suburban London'.
What it actually becomes is a chase film with a marked lack of suspense, involving the reappearance of Guy, a couple of homeless people who try to help Kate, and the gradual (very gradual) revelation that something rather sinister is lurking in the underground.
There are probably more scares to be had in any old Hammer House of Horror film, and the deathly pace at which the events proceed make one long for the final credits to roll.
