Municipality of Cremona - Violin making - Classical   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-01)
Cremona has always been considered as a city which gave birth to the greatest violin-makers of any time.
This theory is upheld by the year of Andrea Amati’s birth, around 1505, and re-evaluates the importance ascribed to the city of Brescia as the birth-place of the violin with Gasparo Bortolotti da Salò, who was born in 1540.
Moreover, the group of instruments commissioned to Andrea Amati by Carlo IX of France, shortly after the first half of XVI century, demonstrates that the art of the Cremonensis violin-maker was known beyond the Italian borders when Gasparo da Salò was only twenty.

Birational geometry - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
An example is the Cremona group of birational automorphisms of the projective plane.
In purely algebraic terms, for a given field K, this is the automorphism group over K of the field K(X,Y) of rational functions in two variables.
Its structure has been analysed since the nineteenth century; but it is 'large' (while the corresponding group for the projective line consists only of Möbius transformations determined by three parameters).

He was one of a small group of scholars who invigorated medieval Europe in the 12th century by transmitting Greek and Arab traditions in astronomy, medicine and other sciences, in the form of translations into Latin, which made them available to every literate person in the West.
Gerard of Cremona's Latin translation of an Arabic text was the only version of Ptolemy’s Almagest that was known in Western Europe for centuries, until George of Trebizond and then Johannes Regiomontanus translated it from the Greek originals in the fifteenth century.
The Almagest formed the basis for a mathematical astronomy until it was eclipsed by the theories of Copernicus.

The relations with the modern birational geometry will be discussed as well various related topics, among them: homaloidal hypersurfaces, special linear systems of plane curves, congruences of rational curves and their birational classification, rationality problems for conic bundles, etcetera.
