The Crescent has a rich history that goes back to 1925, when the train was inaugurated by Southern Railway.
It was named after the "Crescent City" -- New Orleans -- and originally carried passengers from there to Montgomeery, Alabama.
In 1970, Southern Railway combined the Crescent with the Southerner to form the Southern Crescent.

The Crescent is a passenger train operated by Amtrak in the eastern part of the United States.
Today's Southern Crescent is the lineal descendant of the "Washington and Southwestern Vestibuled Limited," inaugurated in January, 1891, by the Richmond and Danville Railroad along the "Piedmont Air Line Route." This Washington-Atlanta train was soon nicknamed the "Vestibule" because it was the first all-year train with vestibuled equipment operating in the South.
The Southern Crescent was operated by the a predecessor of Norfolk Southern, between Washington, DC's Union Station and New Orleans.

Amtrak promised us a rail pass, that would give us unlimited mileage in the eastern part of USA for 199 $ per person.
I hope that this long letter would give Amtrak some ideas, what to do to rise their standards, and help travellers to be prepared for some unhappy events.

Amtrak wisely restored the place to its original splendor, instead of letting a private developer wreck the place as was done to Pennsylvania Station New York by the Madison Square Garden folks.
