The Return of the Heracleidae under Heracles' great-grandsons is finally successful — although Aristodemus is slain by a thunderbolt, and his sons Procles and Eurysthenes assume leadership of his forces.
Cresphontes secured the rule of Messenia for himself by the following stratagem: it was agreed that the first drawing of lots was for Argos, the second for Lacedaemon, and the third for Messenia.
Both Temenus and the sons of Aristodemus throw stones into a pitcher of water, but Cresphontes cast in a clod of earth; since it was dissolved in the water, the other two lots turned up first.

These incidents are the outrage at Limnae, the quarrel between the Messenian Polychares and the Spartan Euaephnus, and the trickery of Cresphontes by which, after the Dorian invasion, Messenia was allotted to him and Lacedaemorua to his nephews.
Delphi had predicted this outcome to the Messenians: "trickery raised you up and retribution is to follow" (4.12.7), while telling the Spartans, "The Messenian people hold their land by trickery, and will be taken by the same arts which they were the first to use" (4.12.1).
Desiring Messenia, Cresphontes ensured that his lots were of fired clay, which bobbed out of the jar of water in which they were placed, while the unfired lots of his nephews dissolved (4.3.3-6).

cresphontes is at Point Pelee, Ontario, and the even better places to see them are at considerably lower latitudes.
The only other thing I have to say is that there's something about the end of the summer that can make an otherwise sane and reasonably mature woman do strange things, like paint her toenails to match her bicycle.
