South African Museum - The Secretary Bird
The head of a secretary bird has featured as the crest of the South African Museum’s coat-of-arms since it was designed by the then Curator, Roland Trimen, in 1876 and adopted by the Museum’s Trustees in 1877.
The secretary bird crest features as prominently in the existing armorial bearings granted to the Museum by the State Herald in 1973 as it did in the original design, that was never a legally valid coat-of-arms.
The popular name of secretary bird is derived from the fancied resemblance between the long lax feathers of its crest when raised to the quill pens worn behind a secretary’s ear in the last century.

Eggs are buried, not incubated by the heat of the bird, and develop by environmental heat-- in mound-builders by decaying vegetation, with temperature regulated by the male, and in burrow nesters by geothermal volcanic heat or by solar heat on sand.
Young are the most precocial of birds, have contour feathers when they hatch (feet first), leave the natal mound (scratch their way out while lying on their back), and feed on their own with no social behavior with other young and no other parental care.

Chrysti the Wordsmith > Radio Scripts > Secretary Bird
Attached to the back of the secretary bird's head and neck is a crest of long, black-tipped feathers which gives the creature a cockatoo-like appearance.
Like the eagle, the secretary bird is a raptor that soars on a seven-foot wingspan and sports an aquiline beak for tearing at its prey.
The spray of feathers at the bird's neck suggested a name to the first English speakers to encounter the bird in the 18th century, evoking the secretaries of the 1700s who stuck an abundance of feathered quill pens behind their ears or in their powdered wigs.
