Crest of a Knave is an album by the British progressive rock group Jethro Tull, released in 1987.
In response to the criticism they received over the award, the band then reportedly took out an advert in a British music periodical with the line, "The flute is a heavy metal instrument!".
The style of Crest has been compared to that of Dire Straits, in part because Anderson seemed to no longer have the vocal range he once possessed.

Forget the critics (with full respect to Peter Rideout): Crest of a Knave is one of the most underappreciated gems in prog-rock, and one of the two best "comeback" albums of the 80s (the other is Octave by The Moody Blues).
Crest of a Knave is very mediocre and I have to be honest I lose interest very early on, only ' Budapest' truly demanding a relisten.
Crest of a knave is not my favourite Jethro Tull album, but this album provide something new, where folk prog as Jethro Tull main characteristic combine with rock sound in 80s.

There still is enough electronica on Crest Of A Knave to suggest that Tull had finally worked through the feeling-out phase and had found the right balance between it and a more organic sound.
The opening track "Steel Monkey," while not the greatest song Tull had come up with in their 20 years of existence to that point, is still a respectable effort, and is one of the more memorable songs on the disc.
The bulk of Crest Of A Knave, while listenable and somewhat enjoyable, does tend to wear the listener down a bit.

MTV did an article panning the Grammys in which they showed how silly it was to consider Crest of a Knave Heavy Metal by playing part of a particularly soft piece by Tull from another album.

In 1987 Jethro Tull were languishing — three years since Under Wraps (an indifferent selling, synth-dominated album that none of them remember with much pleasure), neglected by the Chrysalis label their success helped to found, and with the boss recuperating after serious throat problems.

Musically, Crest of A Knave is one of the most diverse albums that Tull had done to that point, and it was the album that fans of the band had hoped for after the promising The Broadsword and the Beast.
The range of music on Crest of A Knave is such that there is something there for everyone, but one cannot make the mistake of not hearing the unique Tull sound on this album.
The lecherous lyrics of "Budapest" from Crest of A Knave became downright blatant with this album's "Kissing Willie" yet the album was also blessed with several excellent pieces in "Ears of Tin," "Rock Island" and "The Whaler's Dues." However, the album was full of messages, both disguised and some not-so-disguised.

Two weeks before the official release of "Crest Of A Knave", the album was aired at the annual Cropredy Festival in England.

Jethro Tull may not quite be a Hard Rock band---and they sure ain't Heavy Metal---but when they do rock, they ROCK, as evidenced on "Crest Of A Knave." The opening cut alone, "Steel Monkey," with it's menacing keyboard intro, Martin Barre's slashing guitar riffs, and pounding rhythms, is a classic Tull rocker.
And "Crest Of A Knave" is arguably the very best work guitarist Martin Barre has ever done with Tull, his six-string attack on this album nothing less than stunning.
I've got everything both bands have done.Crest of a Knave is hardly a metal album but arguably is...

At least Crest of a Knave rocked harder than any Tull album since Aqualung, and was arguably their best album since Stormwatch.
The opening moments of “Steel Monkey” are a revelation: the synthesizers and electronic percussion suddenly made sense in the context of Ian Anderson’s manic arrangements, the colorless voice at least bright with conviction.
Two tracks are only available on the CD version of Crest: “Dogs In The Midwinter” and “The Waking Edge.” They’re not as heavy as “Jump Start” and “Raising Steam,” and likely serve to soften the whole Crest experience (we’ll assume the Grammy judges owned the elpee or cassette).

Jethro Tull's '87 album Crest of a Knave was pretty good, but just about everything I've heard since has been pretty tiresome, and I stopped buying albums after Catfish Rising in '91.
Mind, I've got ~21 Tull CDs, so giving up on the band was something of a big deal to me. But then EMI had the ever-so-brilliant idea of asking Ian Anderson to put together an album for their classical division, Angel.
While most of the instruments outside the flutes and guitars are synthesized, it's still intended to sound like an album of acoustic folks songs and is quite lovely.

The drummer was replaced by a drum sampler and Tull released their most Un-Tull like album to date, but it still had enjoyable moments.
The band replaced keyboarists twice for the following 2 albums in Crest of a knave in 1987 and Rock Island in 1989, but they gained their longest serving drummer for the two albums and every other album which followed to this day.
Tull were more of a hard edged rock band in the late 80s and Ians great voice showed first signs of deteriation.
