The Eurasian Shelduck, Tadorna tadorna, has the unusual habit of the adults congregating together for the autumn moult, when as in all ducks they lose all their flight feathers and are flightless for several weeks.
At the end of the breeding season, Eurasian Shelduck chicks are gathered together in crèches and looked after by one or two 'aunt' ducks while the rest fly off to Bridgwater Bay in the UK or Knechtsand in Germany to moult.
Shelducks tend to feed on molluscs and crustaceans from shallow water.

Distribution The Crested Shelduck (see Remarks 1) is known by just a handful of confirmed records from south-east Russia, Korea and Japan, plus several unconfirmed reports from these countries and north-east China.
Most of these were the result of a five-year survey (1985_1990), during which leaflets with paintings of Crested Shelducks were widely distributed, and follow-up interviews were held with hunters and other outdoor workers who claimed to have seen this species (Zhao Zhengjie 1992; but see Remarks 5).
Remarks (1) The Crested Shelduck was described by Sclater (1890) as a possible hybrid between Ruddy Shelduck Tadorna ferruginea and Falcated Teal Anas falcata.

In flight: In both sexes the wing pattern is much as on Ruddy Shelduck, with striking white upper wing- and under wing-coverts contrasting with flish flight feathers.
Evidence tends to support the theory that the species has been declining for a long time and may already be extinct, but there is a faint hope that it may survive, as echoed by the sightings in 1964 and 1971 (see Distribution).

With just three documented sightings of Crested Shelducks during this century, information about breeding, habitat and voice calls is unknown.
However, descriptions of the Crested Shelduck have been fairly consistent for both the adult male and female (no juveniles have been spotted).
