Crestone is easily accessible to visitors, a Forest Service campground is about a half mile north of town, and other lodging is available including several bed and breakfasts.

Crestone Peak is located in the heart of the Sangre De Cristo Range which means the ‘blood of Christ’ in Spanish.
The summit of Crestone Needle is only about 1000 vertical feet from the top of the pass so we decided to at least proceed to the couloir where the scrambling begins on the Crestone Needle.
We were happy to have gained the summit of Crestone Peak and spent the afternoon eating and resting for our attempt on The Needle and Humboldt Peak that would be starting early tomorrow.

After seeing the Crestone Peak and Needle for the first time while on Kit Carson last week, I knew I had to climb them.
Given that, we decided that Crestone Peak was the better choice for the day, so that we can avoid using Broken Hand Pass to gain the Peak from the South Colony Lakes.
Fortunately, the clouds were finally giving it a rest around Crestone Peak, and armed with our topo map Erin and I decided the red couloir we had been regarding had to be the one.

Prospectors had been working the mountain range starting in 1879 with considerable success but not to the extent of creating a boomtown anywhere along the range.
In 1890, free-milling gold was discovered but before anyone knew the veins were comparatively shallow, Crestone was built.

We had an epic climb of Crestone Peak the day before and was weathered off of Crestone Needle about 700 vertical feet from the summit.
The view of the Crestones are amazing and the peaks look almost unclimbable from this perspective.
The Crestones are amazing peaks and have become some of my favorite 14ers.
