Creswick is a former gold-mining township 20 km.
Creswick was the birthplace of other notable Australians: John Curtin (1885), Labor Prime Minister of Australia, 1941-45; Sir Alexander Peacock (1861), Victorian Premier, 1901-02, 1914-17 and 1924; and Thomas Laby (1880) physicist.
Creswick's census populations have been 3,969 (1871), 2,615 (1911), 1,403 (1947), 1,786 (1971) and 2,327 (1996).

Creswick Woollen Mills has operated since 1947 and is the last spinning mill of its type operating in Australia.

Although a miners' union had been formed at Creswick sometime in the early 1870s, it wasn't until mine owners sought to reduce the price of contracting in the nearby Rostori alluvial mine in 1878 that miners united to the extent they did.
Under the leadership of W.G. Spence and John Sampson, the existing union was reformed as the Creswick Miners' Association.
In 1883, the Creswick Miners' Union became a branch of the Amalgamated Miners' Association of Victoria which went on to be known as the Amalgamated Miners' Association of Australasia and then the Australasian Coal & Shale Employees' Federation.

John, Elizabeth and 2 young children, Mary and John Henry, came to Australia on the "Berkshire" arriving at Point Henry in Geelong on October 3, 1848.
Then they went to Kingston, near Creswick, and continued farming in that area.
Both John and Elizabeth are buried at the Creswick Cemetery.
